that's just a shame. My POD was on TX, so this is not just about sour grapes. Small play on Twins, no action on SF although I liked the Freak, just don't like big chalk when a team can't score.

SF's only run scored by a runner who was actually out and 2nd but called safe

NY, tied 2-2, takes a 4-2 lead in the 7th after a dead red strike was called a ball on Lance Berkman, he follows with a an RBI double to take the lead and then scores himself when he should have been cheering from the dugout

TX up 2-0, takes a 5-0 after Young was down on strikes but given another chance by team blue and hits a 3 run homer

they are impact players baby, go team blue

I'm not going to cry conspiracy.
I'm not going to use the 'fix' word.

What I will say is I have been watching, playing, etc etc. baseball longer than most of the community has been alive, and I will say this, I have seen hundreds, yes, I said hundreds of games decided on, or games changed by HPU called strike 3 on a clear ball 2 on 1 and 2 counts, and conversely, I can't even tell you how many times, especially with two or more men on base, I have seen games determined by a home plate umpire on a 2-2 pitch that was clearly strike 3, called ball three, making an apparant strike out a full count, only to have the batter hit the next ptich for a 2 run double, when in reality he should have been on the bench.

Makes you think.

Mauer's double called foul

two guys out at third base last year vs Angels, Posada allowed to stay despite being tagged while standing off the base (he was entitled to the base, but walked off) Umpire 2 feet away from the play

fan interference on a HR allowed vs O's

Knoblach missing a RS runner by 6 feet (literally) and still getting the out call

If these calls went against the NYY, we'd have replay today

I didn't have any action on the Yanks/Twins game, but I was in disbelief when that pitch to Lance Berkman was called a ball. A terrible call. Then he hits the next pitch up against the wall. That was definitely a turning point in the game.

Out by a mile but not according to ump in Braves vs Giants game. This stolen base led to games only run in 1-0 Giants win.

The epidemic is spreading.

From St. Petersburg to Minneapolis to the city by the bay, controversial calls are already beginning to overtake the 2010 MLB Playoffs.
While each call has had an impact, the most significant by far came on Thursday night during the San Francisco Giants' 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the NLDS.

Why was it significant? Because it directly involved the runner who would score the game's only run.

The contest was otherwise defined by superb pitching efforts from both Tim Lincecum and Derek Lowe and it was clear that both managers knew what they were up against.

Nowhere was that more clear than in the fourth inning, when Bruce Bochy elected to put Buster Posey — he of no career steals — in motion with Pat Burrell at the bat and no outs.

The move paid off for Bochy, but as you can see in the picture beow Posey was out by quite a lot.

He wasn't called that way, though, because second base umpire Paul Emmel saw it quite differently.

"I saw him safe," Emmel said. "That's what I called."

Emmel's call changed the entire landscape of the inning for Lowe and Bobby Cox. Posey would score on a two-out single by Cody Ross(notes) later in the inning. Neither team would score again.

But while plenty of Braves fans protested on Twitter, no one on the Braves said a peep at the time.

Not Brooks Conrad puts the tag on Buster Posey. Clearly out he was called safe on the play.

And not word of protest by Bobby Cox:

"I haven't seen it," Cox said of the tag play after the game. "Some of the guys came down after that inning and said he was out by six, eight inches. I didn't see a reaction from anyone. From the dugout you can't see anything."
You can't see anything from the dugout? Maybe that helps explain all of those ejections over the years.

The Braves' lack of protest doesn't change the facts of what we all saw. The reality is the call was missed and the game was changed because of it. Another game, another controversy.

Worse yet, we're only two days in.

A web site called Brooks Baseball said Hunter Wendelstedt called 31 pitches wrong in the Twins/Yanks game last night. They use Pitchf/x data. Here is their chart of pitches and calls:

the only problem with baseball is.........how do you fix it? you certainly can't have instant replay on balls and strikes or some kind of AI calling the pitches.

instant replay on safe/out calls would slow down the game dramatically, more than it already is.

I say put these guys in some kind of extensive training and than for every time they blow a call they get fined. in any other job when you make critical mistakes that cost your company big time there are repercussions. These guys are effecting the out come of one of the most popular sports in the world....why not penalize them for their errors?

Here's an infamous bad call that brought down a sportsbook and all the customers involved in the 1985 World Series.
From my book: We Were Wiseguys And Didn't Know It, pg 146:

GARY AUSTIN
Gary Austin came to Las Vegas from Southern California where it was rumored he had made a small fortune in real estate. Gary was a good handicapper, winning the Castaways Football Contest with an unreal 62 percent. He was featured in an article in Sports Illustrated and was a local hero for a while. He was a gambler, but his legacy wouldn’t be his gambling exploits, however. His claim to fame or infamy in LV came as a result of his being too successful. Gary bought the old, stand-alone Rose Bowl race and sports book where the Wynn now sits. The property alone, forget the book, was worth many millions. Gary booked high and could have been a Las Vegas icon. He put his opinion into his numbers, and the players loved it. He was in the class of a Gene Mayday or the Stardust. He was big time.

The problem was he believed his own hype. He probably thought of himself as being invincible. He began purposely putting up bad numbers so the sharps would bet them. Of course, this produced an inflated, temporary bankroll for him, which he then proceeded to bet with. Bad combination, betting with other people’s money. It all came crashing down during the 1985 Kansas City/St. Louis World Series won by the Royals. He overextended himself. An error at first base and a blown call by first base umpire Don Dekinger cost him around $750,000. The next day there was a sign on the door that said they were closed due to a robbery. Not the robbery at first base but the sports book itself was allegedly robbed. Everyone got stiffed but a few ticket holders with muscle behind them.

A couple days later, at 11:30 p.m. (how could I not remember) I got a call at home. It was apparent from the first word that these guys were pros and not to be taken lightly. Paraphrasing, it went like this: Scotty, we have a message for you. We’re not interested in harming you, but Gary Austin still has a live phone account with you (i.e., Stardust). It’s not right for him to be betting while he owes us. They were calm and didn’t threaten me, but I got the point. Next morning I call Gary and tell him to empty his phone account; he was done with us. Unbelievably, he said it was not his personal money but belonged to the corporation, and he didn’t understand why he couldn’t continue to bet. Not being a good debater,I told him in these exact words: "Gary, I’m putting your money in a brown bag, and if you’re not out front within half an hour, I’m setting it on the curb."

I closed his phone account (although not exactly according to GCB regulations), put his balance in a brown bag, and went out front under the porticoes. Shortly afterward, Gary came in his Cadillac, I handed him the bag with +$50,000 in it, and he drove off still holding to his "I got robbed" story.

Where’s Gary Austin now? He’s in Costa Rica, back in business in a luxurious property. He married a former Miss Costa Rica and is a wealthy man again. He still hasn’t paid the vast majority of his Las Vegas ticket holders. He’s paid a few, those who would put a knot on his head. This reinforces my theory: If we took all the money in the world and divided it up equally, it wouldn’t take long till the same people ended up with it again.

The umpiring is absolutely horrible. Worst I've eer seen. And we've had 3 ejections in 3 days. Umps are more worried about getting on tv and having their names called than being a ghost like they should be. Replay is needed badly. NFL replay is a joke too...they don't even get it right half the time after watching replay. College foots have the best replay system in that every play is reviewed. Baseball and NFL should adopt similar approach. Fuck this challenge bullshit....refs make you waste your challenges when they eff up.

Maddon asks for advancements in MLB replay

October 9, 2010 2:16 PM | No Comments

By Mark Gonzales

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon is aware that controversial calls in the post-season aren't limited to Michael Young's checked swing that went against him and the Rays Thursday.

The fact that blown calls have been "piling up" have supported Maddon's request for this off-season.

"Really what's been going on cries for more meetings, more review in the off-season to try to come up with a system that is amenable to both sides," said Maddon, pushing for more advancement.

"There was a time I used a computer in the 1990s and people looked at me as if I had two heads for using a computer at this time. And you look at the information going on, all the data prior to each game, each series, it is incredible. And hard-liners, old-school guys that frowned upon that stuff in the early '90s are using it quite frequently and to their advantage. So my belief is and a lot of times in our game we move at a glacier pace normally, and that's just the way that baseball is."

Maddon hopes there is some common ground reached this winter on the best way to implement instant replay that will satisfy all parties involved.

"Things are invented, there is new technology that can help this process and also be expeditious in regards to the way it's utilized," Maddon said. "So I believe as we move down the road, we have a lot of smart people involved here, that all of this technology is going to be utilized in the proper way.

"I think it's going to be done slowly, which I think is the right way to do it. I don't think you should jump in both feet and go crazy about it, but I believe you should research properly."
