Watch out for Maddon's Lineup Card

This arrogant fool is thinking about releasing the same righty lineup that failed miserably in game 1. That means Kelly "Automatic Out" Shoppach will be in for Jaso at catcher, and Aybar may dh for Johnson. Washington is thinking about keeping the game 1 lineup that was pretty damn successful against Price.

I will lose whatever little respect I have for Maddon if he plays Shoppach in this game.

ST. PETERSBURG — Manager Joe Maddon was leaning left for a while, but he decided his lineup was all right.

Maddon was considering using more of his left-handed hitters against Rangers LHP Cliff Lee, but he said Monday that he probably will stick with the right-handers.

That means Kelly Shoppach will catch instead of John Jaso, and Ben Zobrist will be in right instead of Matt Joyce, with Sean Rodriguez at second. What sounded still undecided was whether lefty Dan Johnson or switch-hitter Willy Aybar will be the DH; the Rays had Rocco Baldelli in Game 1, but he has since been removed from the roster.

"I'm probably leaning toward what we've normally been doing against left-handed pitching, because it's pretty much how we got to this particular point and I don't know that it's the right time to start messing with the whole everything of the group," Maddon said. "Furthermore, I have a lot of confidence in these other guys."

The Rays are 36-22 overall against lefty starters but have lost their past five and were shut out three times.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Texas manager Ron Washington didn't want to get into specifics about how the Rangers would attack David Price in Game 5 tonight, but the lineup figures to be similar to Game 1.
"It will probably be almost the same lineup," Washington said. "I haven't decided what changes I'm going to make yet, but it will certainly be more or less the same."
If that's the case, you can expect by Jeff Francoeur to start. Francoeur hit an RBI double off David Price in the Rangers' 5-1 Game 1 victory.
The right fielder is looking forward to getting his second start of the series Tuesday.
"The moment we lost Game 4, I was preparing for tomorrow night," he said. "I love playing in these types of games."
Washington said Bengie Molina, who had a homer and two RBIs off Price in Game 1, would catch. One position that's still undecided is first base. Jorge Cantu went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in the first game and hasn't started since.
Mitch Moreland has started the past three games against right-handed starters, and is hitting .182.
"I'm going to talk to [hitting coach] Clint [Hurdle] and see where we go with that," Washington said. "My heart wants to get Cantu in there. I've just got a feeling."
Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said he was debating a couple of spots for his team's lineup against Cliff Lee.
"Our left-handed hitters really have not swung the bat often against left-handed pitching this year, although they did a nice job against Texas when I left them in there versus their bullpen," Maddon said.
Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena, two of Tampa's top left-handed hitters, combined to go 1 for 7 in Game 1. Crawford went 0 for 4 in Game 2 with Texas left-hander C.J. Wilson on the mound. Pena did not play.

Here's the real kicker in the art of Maddon's Managing.

Cliff Lee's numbers:

vs. Lefthanded Batter 0 0 3.28 27 0 0 0 0 0 46.2 54 20 17 4 0 4 0 35 0 2 0 0 1 .281
vs. Righthanded Batter 0 0 3.15 28 0 0 0 0 0 165.2 141 64 58 12 1 14 2 150 4 1 0 1 2 .227

If he wants to truly win, there better be Pena, Johnson, and Jaso in that lineup tonight. If not, he might pay for his stupidity

i think he does, but he gets so worked up about the batting averages of his players against lefties. This is game 5, you play the players that are producing for you now and won those games in arlington for you. Plus, why would you field the same guys that failed for you big time in game 1? Jaso, Johnson, and Pena all contributed to extending this series, they deserve to start. Kelly Shoppach shouldn't even be in the majors.

Uh, 'cause history tends to repeat itself? Better yet, as we all know, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result, LOL. GL, starting to look np here.

oops, here's the link for clarity: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=leecl02&year=Career&t=p

It would appear to me that the crucials are nearly negligible: including BIp, OBS, SLG, OPS. Those indicate runs scored against, which matter at the pay window.

The most striking stat is the nearly 33% higher strikeout to walk tally vs LEFTIES...which is certainly why Maddon's going righty...the 13 point BS increase with L's is worthy of mention, but not particularly noteworthy.

I belive he "truly" wants to win and is using a data set that likely stretches far beyond the means or scope of this thread. When it comes right down to it, Lee is a top tier arm, who can navigate any given line-up, on any given night.

That SO to BB tally is insignificant tonight IMO. Lee does not walk batters, plain and simple. Consequently, I want my guys who are hitting at the plate, simple concept.

Yes, I agree with mader. Lee doesn't walk people period, 18 the whole year. He fanned 10 against that right-handed lineup. Adjustments should be made based on that.

hey guys, I'm not trying to stir things up...heck, I see the your points. Just supplying some more data. It's real close in the end, truly is. Truth is, there were 5-6 hard hit balls against Lee a week ago that could have easily found grass over leather...just the way the game works sometimes.

Two starts ago vs TB he gave up 6 earned runs in 7 innings...with 6 righties in the l-up.

Let's see what happens...

I'm all up for discussion, so don't feel pressured or offended by me :)

I was on that game where lee gave up the 6 runs to tampa, and that was purely a fluke performance. He dominated them for 7 straight innings, but a long top 8 inning by the rangers (I believe 30 minutes) threw lee off his rhythm and washington didn't go to the bullpen soon enough and it all fell apart in the bottom half. Truly one of the luckier wagers won.

What I am looking at tonight though is that the ranger defense did not play well this weekend, and even though Tampa was blanked out in the first game, they did hit the ball hard and well. They were just unfortunate in the fact that they were right at defensemen. From what I am reading from the tampa papers, Price has been chomping at the bit to pitch again in this series. So even though loser shoppach is in the lineup, I have to lean towards the rays here based on price's potential, texas's offensive mini slump and shoddy defensive play, and tampa's superiority in the bullpen.

Good luck tonight guys.
