A small mountain town in California now has phone service for the first time in history, Fox40.com reports.

The roughly 200 full-time residents in Iowa Hill, Calif. -- 58 miles northeast of Sacramento -- finally got a dial tone last week.

The historic gold mining town, sandwiched between the Iowa Hill Divide on the west and Indian Creek on the east, sits at an elevation of 2,818 feet.

The Placer County town has long relied only on cell phone service, which is often spotty and unreliable in cases of an emergency.

The Iowa Hill phone lines and wiring are being paid for by a $2.5 million grant from the California Public Utilities Commission, the station reports.
