Legend has it that the term "airplane bet" originated in Ft Worth, Texas(early 60s), when a local bookmaker in distress took a huge amount wagers on the Texas-TCU game at pickem, when the real line was Texas -14. He watched the game on one of those coin operated TVs at the airport, and after TCU pulled the upset, went home and was back in business.

I always thought an airplane bet was max betting both sides of a game with different bookies, collecting from the winning side, and hopping a plane and stiffing the losing side.
