You are 22 and just out of college.

1) You go work for the profession you studied for and make $ 100,000 a year , every year until you feel like retiring. You work 50 to 60 hours a week. You may never engage in any form of gambling what so ever.. Nothing for your entire life. No Vegas , no bets with friends , nothing..

2) You are a professional gambler who is guaranteed between $ 40,000 and
$ 50,000 a year every year of your life. Your time is your own and you obviously work when you want to.

You must pay your applicable taxes on both incomes. In both scenarios , you can be married and your wife brings in some money.

Which life do you want ?

Choice #1 sucks. And it has nothing to do with not being able to gamble. It has to do with being away from the family.

So if I had to choose? #2.

What good is money if you work so damn much you can't spend it til you are near death. #2 is the clear option regardless of education which is so overrated and yes I have a degree.

neither. #1 is just pathetic waste of time and life. #2 you lose a lot of human contact except the family, since this is very time consuming.

#1 easily, that's what you are supposed to do.

Health insurance would come with #1....becomes more important as you age. Lack of insurance leads to most of my wifely fights.

That's like asking if I would rather be an AIDS patient in advance stages or have Bill Gates hand over his entire net worth to me

Fifty hours per week means an eight hour day every single day until I snap/burnout. Probably by age 25, which means a total income of like $300k to last the rest of your life. I guess I could study something I truly enjoy and maybe last until 30 or so. Still tough to have zero vacation and only be allowed the weekend off if I work 10 to 12 hours during the week

Whereas a professional gambler with a guaranteed income has to be the ultimate way to go. Just relax, eat healthy, live to 80 and that's like a few million without ever working a day in your life

Health insurance for someone in their 20s isn't too expensive and with a nice bank account and as much leisure time as you want, it shouldn't be too hard to marry into some once in your 30s. Any other non-economic benefits from the workforce can't match casino comps

i dont think its that extreme.. i guess i should have put in there the usual vacation time one gets with a normal job. i didnt mean work 52 weeks a year. there are tons of people working 50 hours a week for 100 g's a year or less .

i guess whole point of this exercise was to see how people felt about :

normal to some added work time - any gambling = good income vs. owning your own time for a lot less money.

It still boils down to the amount of time needed to gamble to make that 50K.

that could easily be the same 50 hours or more spent at a traditional job.

I'd rather make 100k instead of 50k and have health insurance and maybe a pension and possibly SS ( doubtful 45 years from now).

If it is just a few hours a week gambling, then YES to that !

can I work at some other job too ?

can I do anything else like trade stocks, coins, grains ( FH) or something ?

that 50k will be a lot less in 20-30-40 years since I'm only 22 in this example. My 100k job should increase over the decades.

If these were the only two options then 1, but fortunately they're not.
