The Boston Red Sox stepped up to the plate and exercised the $12.5 million option on David Ortiz.

The Red Sox will need his power. The designated hitter led the club with 32 home runs and tied for the team lead with 102 RBIs in 2010 - his sixth 30-homer, 100-RBI season.

The Red Sox are likely to lose sluggers Adrian Beltre and Victor Martinez to free agency.

Ortiz, 34, has spent the last eight season with the Red Sox. He has said all along he wanted to return to the club and would like a multi-year extension. The Red Sox have not ruled that out as of yet.

What the hell are the Red Sox thinking? I'll tell you what I think, they've been smoking crack. First they go out and buy a soccer team, A Soccer Team??? WTF and now they sign Ortiz to a 12.5 million dollar deal.... jeesh. I guess I'm just grateful they didn't trade Bard/Youklis to finance a Phantom of the Opera play or some shit.
