Brian Billick on Cowboys Job: Jerry Jones would have to take a step back
Billick: Jones Did Right Thing By Naming Garrett Coach
By Brian Smith, FOXSportsSouthwest.com
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gets a thumbs-up from former head coach Brian Billick about his handling of the team’s coaching change, but Billick remained very non-committal about whether he wanted the job on Dan Patrick’s radio show today.
When asked if he wanted the Cowboys’ head coaching job, Billick instead chose to focus on how Jones named Jason Garrett the interim coach. “I think Jerry Jones has actually gone about it in a very intelligent way. He has a guy currently in place that kind of wanted to be the head coach anyway under the most difficult circumstances. What better [way] to say, ‘Can you be a head coach or not?’” Billick said.
Billick said he believes the move leaves Jones with options, should Garrett’s stint as interim coach not work out. “This also allows him to move forward because interim is in front of Jason Garrett’s title and in a very ethical way and say you’re the interim but you’ve got to know as the season goes on I’m going to put those mechanisms in place to consider some of the other options should you not do a good job and should I need to go in another direction,” Billick said.
However, Billick also seemed to distance from the job when talking about the Cowboys’ power structure. “Jerry needs to obviously step back and look at his design as a whole beyond just that just of a head coach. How’s that for a diplomatic answer?”
Billick coached the Baltimore Ravens to an 80-64 record in nine seasons. The Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV in 2001 behind one of the best defenses in NFL history.
