I know violations and fees are different from state to state but I am looking for some input if anybody knows of or has been in my current situation.
I live in California and was issued a temporary handicap parking permit for 6 months back in May for a back injury. When I went to the doctors on November 2nd they went ahead and extended my parking permit for another 6 months. However I haven't gotten around to go the DMV yet to get a new parking permit. I thought my current permit was good until the end of November.
So I parked today in a handicap spot at an outside mall for lunch today and placed my handicap permit on my mirror. To my surprise when I came back to my car I saw a citation on my car for "misuse of handicap permit" because my sign expired on November 5th. I never noticed that the DMV punched these permits to expire on a certain date. My fault for not noticing but regardless I am legally allowed to park in the handicap spots. What are my chances of getting this ticket dismissed with proof of an up to date parking permit?
It's a fuckin $300 ticket. Is the state really out there trying to shakedown money like that from its handicap citizens?
