I had a small one yet there is someone I worj with that spent 45000$ on her wedding , I went a few weeks ago and it was nice do not get me wrong, but she is 25 and as far as I know the family did not pay for it all she has almost 20K in debt because of it. I think its ridiculos to spend that when your just starting out in marriage to be saddled with a debt like that ... but thats me:think2:

Nothing wrong with starting off drowning in Massive Debt........Tell them to just spend more, maybe do some shovel ready fix ups around the new house, spend a few thousand more going Solar and ooooooooooo dont forget to tell 1 of them to quit their job and take a LOT of vacations... work less, spend more...............If it works for our POTUS it will work for anyone..

That's what a father in law is for.

Our wedding was HUGE. Well over 350 people, maybe close to 400 by the time all was said and done. We actually went to him and offered him a "50 cent on the dollar out of church settlement", where we offered to get married in Vegas (although the wife wouldn't let me get Elvis to do it ~ it had to be a Catholic Priest if we were going to do it) with just the immediate family in turn for givins us half, in cash, of what a large wedding would cost, but he turned us down, as the wifey is the first child born and he wanted to do a lavish affair.

If you remember the advertisement a few years ago, I think it was for some insurance company or investement firm, where the father daydreamed about his daughter growing up, etc and at the wedding they even needed ice sculptures. Well, we had ice sculptures for the cold seafood area.

250 people..close to 40k. No debt - wife's family paid for most of it. I don't think it was worth it, however, for my wife it is a totally different story. I think she would do even more if given the chance again!

Go back and forth between what the biggest scam in this country is, either weddings or college

The amount that so many people spend on those things is enough to set me up for life

The difference between the expensive wedding and the cheaper ones makes a (small) difference for one day

(I guess college is worse because you not only lose the money, but also a lot of time that can be spent earning income and building work skills)

Weddings. With college you at least get a degree that looks nice in a frame, an education (if you chose to pay attention) and a chance to buy alumni tickets. With a wedding you get... well, some leftover custom-printed napkins and matchbooks.

Spending a whole bunch on a wedding is about the absolute worst thing a couple can do. It puts them in a giant financial hole right at the start of their marriage. For a party that lasted maybe four hours they may be paying 10 years. Better to save the money for the inevitable times it will be needed over the years.

Folks have their priorities out of whack. A wedding means nothing. A marriage, though, means a whole lot. If a couple makes it to 50 years together, blow some cash on a party then.

The thing is, everyone has their priorities exactly right. A lot of people value one night of a big cake, loud music and fancy clothes instead of a lifetime of debt-free living. I may not understand it, but I try to accept some people have different values than I do

Problem with college, though, is it not only costs a lot of money, but also a lot of time that could be spent earning both money and income potential rather than just falling into debt. Obviously it can be done right. But then again marrying a really rich girl and biting your tongue while seeing $200k blown on the wedding and honeymoon would be an even better investment

I don't understand why so many men still fall under the illusion that life is about getting married, having kids, and paying off the mortgage+colleges.

Just doesn't sound as appealing anymore.

See, I think this is where the wedding industry has pulled off their greatest PR triumph. They start getting into little girls' heads very, very early in their lives, putting out this fantasty of a "dream wedding" that makes everything magical. If you were to ask people which they'd prefer: To blow $40,000 of their hard-earned money on one-night party or to use it make their life easier, any sane person is going to choose the latter. But call it a "wedding" instead of a "party," and women can't think straight.

That applies to some men too -- I know of at least one acquantaince who went nuts over his wedding -- but mostly women.

One of my buddies is still paying off the engagement ring he bought for his wife, and they've been married for close to 10 years. He says it makes him feel sick making that payment each month.

Can't find any faults with the advice on marrying a rich girl, though, and letting them do anything they want for a wedding. I'd be willing to let a rich daddy slide on a lot of things. Especially if he looked to be a little elderly and frail.
