Gator (Jan. 1 at Jacksonville)...Michigan State vs. Arkansas.
No
longer an ACC-Big East battle, this one is the latest addition to what now is a
Big Ten-SEC trifecta on New Year’s Day. Michigan State could still have a
look at the BCS but we suspect it will be more likely to end up in one of the
Florida New Year’s games. Arkansas still has an outside shot at a BCS at-large
spot if it wins out in the regular season, but likely lands in Florida on New Year’s.

Rose (Jan. 1 at Pasadena)...Stanford vs. Ohio State.
BCS mechanics
could be working overtime here, as Rose Bowl organizers will risk a huge p.r.
backlash if they opt to take a Pac-10 runner-up (assuming an unbeaten
Oregon makes the BCS title game), such as Stanford, instead of an
undefeated Boise or TCU. But we know what the uppity Rose organizers
think of leagues outside their limited sphere. Expect another book from
Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel if Boise and TCU are bypassed.

Fiesta (Jan. 1 at Glendale)...Nebraska vs. Boise State
. It’s looking as
if Boise might have to settle for the Fiesta again, as BCS mechanics seem
destined to keep it out of the title game one more. The Cornhuskers look safely
into the Big XII title game, where they will likely be favored over any South rep.

Orange (Jan. 3 at Miami)...Virginia Tech vs. Pitt.
A month ago we
wouldn’t have considered projecting either of these two into the BCS. But the
recent emergence of each is indicative of how fluid the 2010 season has
become. Now we think the Hokies and Panthers are the best teams in the ACC
and Big East, respectively.

Sugar (Jan. 4 at New Orleans)...TCU vs. Wisconsin.
What might have
been for TCU, which looks like a championship caliber team to us, but needs
someone to beat Auburn or Oregon to reach the title game. The Badgers are
well-placed for a BCS at-large with wins in their final three games.
