Jose Aldo of the WEC is my choice. I think he can beat anyone in the UFC at his weight.

That's because there is no one in the UFC at his weight. If I dropped to 145-pounds you could say the same thing about me

UFC champion would be worth a lot more money, so if he is good enough, why does he pass on fighting lightweight?

GSP and Silva are the only two in contention right now

Aldo hasn't been properly tested to be considered at #1 just yet. Anderson Silva has holes but deserves to be #1. If he beats Vitor then I'll put him #1 all time over Fedor. Fedor has only 3 or 4 wins that meaning anything nowadays. Great fighter but most of his career has been against guys who wouldn't stand a chance in the current day MMA scene. Silva has beaten wrestlers and jiu jitsu fighters with ease. On a massive winning streak. The one knock on him is that he hasn't fought an elite striker lately so a win against Belfort will put him over the top IMO.

If you dropped to 145 you would not be the best pound for pound fighter. Who is close to that weight in the UFC that can beat Jose if they dropped or gained?

Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, BJ Penn would all beat Aldo IMO. He's never been tested against wrestlers like Edgar and Maynard. Penn has beat up everyone not named Edgar. Penn can't handle the speed of Edgar's punches. Aldo isn't in that mold.

Aldo was offered a shot at Kenny Florian for his first UFC fight but his manager turned it down so he could stay at 145. FYI.

Yeah but what does Aldo have to gain by doing that fight? Kenny doesn't have a belt, Aldo does. IMO Kenny should go to his weight. Unless its a title fight, why would Aldo chance it?

GSP is the best by far IMHO !

He's right up there. Strong everywhere. He's figured out how to win fights while putting himself in almost zero danger.

Right now i'd have to go GSP - like Jake said, he hasn't been in trouble during a fight in so long... he outwrestles the wrestlers, can defend against guys with better subs, and can stay away from guys with better stand up while out pointing them with takedowns and gnp. Gotta be GSP right now.

He's also so good that he gets the best of the striking against good strikers also. Much of that has to do with the fact that guys he faced are being careful for fear of the takedown, but GSP almost always does better than his opponent while the fight stays standing.
