The New York Yankees’
Derek Jeter is coming off the worst season of his 16-year career, but the Yankees are all-but-guaranteed to break the bank for the future Hall of Fame shortstop this offseason. Jeter’s 10-year, $189 million contract expired last week, and he officially hit the open market over the weekend when New York’s five-day exclusivity window expired.
A source with “intimate knowledge” of ongoing negotiations between the Yankees and Jeter’s agent, Casey Close, tells
ESPN, “The Yankees are going to overpay him. The question is, how much are they going to overpay him?”
New York has not extended formal offers to Jeter, closer Mariano Rivera, or their primary out-of-house target, Texas Rangers left-hander Cliff Lee. The Yankees’ first order of business appears to be re-signing Jeter despite his mediocre 2010 numbers and declining defensive range.
Jeter hit .270 with just 10 HRs and 67 RBIs in 2010. His .340 OBP, .370 SLG and .710 OPS were career lows since he became New York’s everyday shortstop in 1996.
However, the Yankees are prepared to offer Jeter a three-year contract that is reportedly worth between $15 million and $20 million per year.
