very realistic offer IMO but this really surprised me I thought they would grant him whatever he wanted.

Good to see that !

What's your source ?

This is low, but justified.

I think 8-10 M for one year is fair for both sides.

DJ won't be able to field his position beyond next season and isn't DH material and not really a LF either.

So much for the "lifetime achievement" contract !

Who else will pay him big money like 3 years/ 50M ?

no way he retires short of 3k hits, but he is not worth 20M as an aged veteran.

5M a year is sort of an insult but that is realistic considering his age. I'd rather see the NYY give him one year and maybe 8M. If he does well then he can maybe get 15M for the next year.

This is similar to Pettite.

I could see Jeter accepting it with some clauses that pump it up big time for performance.

One year is likely the best option. One year for 10M should work.

Sounds more like 15M per year for 3 years....

Yankees Offering SS Derek Jeter a Three-Year Contract Worth $15-$20 Million Per Year

A source with knowledge of contract negotiations tells ESPN, “The Yankees are going to overpay him.”

The New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter is coming off the worst season of his 16-year career, but the Yankees are all-but-guaranteed to break the bank for the future Hall of Fame shortstop this offseason. Jeter’s 10-year, $189 million contract expired last week, and he officially hit the open market over the weekend when New York’s five-day exclusivity window expired.
A source with “intimate knowledge” of ongoing negotiations between the Yankees and Jeter’s agent, Casey Close, tells ESPN, “The Yankees are going to overpay him. The question is, how much are they going to overpay him?”
New York has not extended formal offers to Jeter, closer Mariano Rivera, or their primary out-of-house target, Texas Rangers left-hander Cliff Lee. The Yankees’ first order of business appears to be re-signing Jeter despite his mediocre 2010 numbers and declining defensive range.
Jeter hit .270 with just 10 HRs and 67 RBIs in 2010. His .340 OBP, .370 SLG and .710 OPS were career lows since he became New York’s everyday shortstop in 1996.
However, the Yankees are prepared to offer Jeter a three-year contract that is reportedly worth between $15 million and $20 million per year.

The Yanks' take it or leave it offer should be 1 year, $5 million and he plays DH. No way is he going to accept getting his 3,000th hit anywhere else; he'll take whatever is offered.

from what I am seeing Jeter is going to get his money no matter what....the disagreements are going to be about the years and length of contract.

he's not really the DH type, you need a 30 HR type of guy not a 10 HR guy. Gold glove ( BS) aside , he is not great ( now) at SS.

I agree with one year and 5M, but he will get much more than that !

DJ will suck at SS in 2012 and beyond.

I think even $15 Mil per is a little too much...... Just saying

My Offer would have been 3 Years $40 Mil, but I guess they want to give him something he really shouldn't Bitch about. Plus it will seem to the Fans... Very Reasonable .

No other Team will offer him that Money.... NONE !
If he Balks at that... then his "Mr. Clean" look, will make him look like a bad guy.
All about the Money ! and for years he has never been like that.

The Yanks can also say to him... listen.... after you are done playing, we want to bring you back as a Coach of some kind. We want to keep you in Pinstripes for the rest of your life.
