My GF is a great cook, and she prepares the whole Thanksgiving dinner from scratch! We just got done shopping at our local Stater Bros. market, and let me tell you, I can't believe what we spent compared to TG's in the past years.

Normally, we have spent anywhere from $100-150 getting all the goodies together. But today, we had a whopping bill of $270. I mean the only things there were great deals on was a 10 pound bag of Russet potatoes for .69c, and a fresh turkey. 99c a pound! I could have gotten a frozen one for .37c a pound "if" I spent $25, LOL, or even a Butterball turkey for .57c a pound! But every thing else in the store was MAYBE a discount of .50c on an item.

She likes to make her own pies, but I'm starting to question whether it's worth the time and effort as well as price, when for 3 bags of shelled Pecan halves cost almost $11, and that doesn't even include the two bottle of Karo syrup, light and dark, the pie shells, and whatever the heck goes into making it.

So if you haven't shopped for Thanksgiving yet, be prepared to face some costly prices when you hit the supermarket.

Plenty of deals, it's just a matter of passing on the things that are expensive

Trader Joe's sells there squash per each, rather than per pound, so under $3 for about seven pounds
Green bean casserole is under $1 per pound and potatoes under $0.50 anywhere
If you already have butter, eggs and sugar, lots of pies can be made for well under $1 per pound, same as ice cream

Exactly how many pounds you you expect each person to eat?

Funny you should post this, as I was going to post a similar thread.
We got back from the Super Stop and Shop 2pm this afternoon after dropping a buck forty, and there are just the two of us (the puppies don't cost much).
As we pulled in you could not not notice that the parking lot looked like the parking lot at Giants Stadium on game day an hour before kickoff of a Cowboy game.
The store was packed, they were almost out of eggs, a third of the shelves were near empty, I even said to my wife "food is flying out of this supermarket" the freezers that house the frozen turkeys had a crowd of people around it, the Customer Service department where you get cigarettes and stuff like that had a line of nine (usually there is no more than three)
Then after we got home we realized we missed several items, and decided to go back since it's only a five minute drive, and dropped another seventy bucks.

And I concur, bargains were few and hard between, there was a nice run on Boston Market product that was nice, but still...........

Grand total 140+70=210 dollars for groceries, easily breaking our grocery bill record of 130 dollars.

Since I've been doing work around the house all day and broke my balls at work all week, I didn't want to go out anymore today, so I am about to crack open a Super Stop and Shop Fosters beer for 2.49, that I can usually get for about 1.79.

p.s. did I mention the gas station across the street is now charging 2.05 a gallon, when three weeks ago the price was 1.87

I'm all for capitalism, I understand 'supply and demand', but there is a time and place for everything, and these aren't the times or the place.

Yeah, Happy Thanksgiving corporate America, enjoy those jacked up holiday prices.

We're paying a $1 a gallon more than you. How many pups do you have? I have 6 that can't wait until TG.

I pay $4+/gallon so complaining about $2/gallon is mindblowing....that's dirt cheap.

I don't give a care about about gas prices.

What are turkey prices looking like 'cuz I need to go buy one.

Quality, per lbs. cost, brand & etc.

Rob, the average price for a turkey is around 40 cents a pound (for a whole one).
Stop and Shop was featuring Shady Brook and Butter Ball, the bird we got is 13.8 pounds and we paid 6.50 for that.
Those two brands are popular and very, very tasty, with Butter Ball supposedly being the Caddilac of turkeys so to speak.

I made a mistake in my earlier post I just noticed, we are paying 3 dollars and change for gas, not two, my bad, but the point I was trying to make is, and I explained it to my wife, is about three weeks ago, the big boy gas companies started inching up gas prices because it's the holiday season, and they know we all need to drive more often, so they can jack up the prices because they got us by the balls, 'supply and demand' and that other happy horse crap.
