Generally when any team in the NFL starts off the season with a record of 2-6, team executives look to shake things up by handing out pink slips.
Already we have seen heads roll in the 2015 season when the Miami Dolphins and the Tennessee Titans fired their head coaches and appointed interim head coaches in their place to finish out the season.
The Dallas Cowboys have done this in the past and it was because of a disappointing season that former head coach Wade Phillips was fired and Jason Garrett started his journey to become the current head coach of America’s Team.
The firing of Phillips and Garrett’s current situation as head coach are starting to look very similar. And history sometimes has a way of repeating itself.
Both Phillips and Garrett were looking to build on the success they had from the previous year and return to the playoffs for the first time in consecutive years in what seems like forever. Unfortunately, neither was able to accomplish what they planned and it could end up costing Garrett’s job just like it did his predecessor. Now, Garrett still has a chance to make it back to the playoffs, but it is a long shot to say the least at this point.
So, should owner/general manager Jerry Jones and the Cowboys organization look into replacing Garrett with a new head coach?
Now don’t get me wrong, I like the atmosphere that Garrett has been able to bring to the organization and I think that the players have bought into his coaching philosophy, but it just seems as if there’s still something missing.
To me, it seems as if Jerry Jones is waiting for Garrett to develop into the type of coach he envisions for the Cowboys and establish that leadership for years to come. Much like the coaching icon Tom Landry was able to do during his tenure with the Cowboys organization.
Garrett may never turn into that long tenured coach that Jerry Jones is wishful of locating, so it is important to be on the lookout for someone who might be able to come in and help make the organization one of the premier teams in the NFL once again.
Honestly, I don’t believe that the Cowboys will have a new head coach in 2016, but there is one name that I think Jerry Jones would think long and hard about if he was wavering about whether or not Garrett is the right person for the job.
It is rumored that current head coach of the New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton, might not return in 2016 because of the legal drama involving New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson that could result in an ownership change.
Payton would be a highly sought-after coaching candidate and he could more than likely be able to pick his new team if he does in fact become available.
The Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans will more than likely be looking for new head coaches, but other teams that could have an interest in Payton could be the Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, and even the San Diego Chargers.
So why would Jerry Jones think that Payton would have an interest in the Cowboys?
First off, Jerry Jones and Sean Payton already have a close personal relationship and a return to the Cowboys organization could be a match made in heaven.
Payton joined Bill Parcells as an assistant head coach and quarterback coach in 2003 until he accepted the job as head coach for the New Orleans Saints in 2006.
Payton already has a working relationship with quarterback Tony Romo and in fact tried to get him to join him in New Orleans when Payton took over the head coaching responsibilities.
Also, Payton moved his family back to the Dallas area in 2011, which added to the speculation that he could perhaps rejoin the Cowboys organization in some type of capacity.
Is this all a coincidence or is everything starting to come full circle for a Sean Payton and Dallas Cowboys reunion?
Of course, this is all just speculation and there has been nothing mentioned or insinuated that Jason Garrett’s job is on the line, especially after signing a five-year $30 million extension last year.

Honestly, I would hate to see Garrett go because I think he does have a bright future as a head coach in the NFL, but I think that if he was replaced by Sean Payton it would actually be an upgrade.
