We are baking our Turkey. It has been cooking for only 2 hours, but looks done. The instructions say 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Rarely is the cooking time half an hour shorter.

We have a mechanical cooking thermometer we just bought. We have never owned one. It is showing 80 degrees before we even put in the Turkey. Is this normal or should it start at 0? When we put it in the Turkey it shows 170 which would mean it is done. Even sitting on the counter it shows 80. Is a cooking thermometer that sensitive to the room temperature?

We don't want to overcook this Turkey.

Unless your cooking it at a very high temperature, I highly doubt it's done in 2 hours. What is the weight of the bird and what temp. are you cooking it at?
Stick a fork in the breast meat. If the juices run clear your prolly pretty close to being done. If they run red....grab another beer.

Make sure you stick the thermometer right in the middle of the breast meat and keep it away from hitting or touching any bones. You'll get a false read cause the bones cook hotter than the middle of the breast meat.

Turkey was way too soft for my taste. It probably was overcooked but none of us knew what we were doing. :think2:

It was a 10 lb young fresh turkey. Maybe it is supposed to be soft, but not sure.

Cooking sucks.
