Haven't been getting laid by women much lately, so I thought I would try to lay some carpet. How hard is it? I've never done it before. There seems like a few good how-to sites. It doesn't seem that hard. It's in the living room, which is basically retangular, no steps. Would love to hear some comments about the level of difficulty. Thank you.

It's more of a pain in the ass than difficult.
We replaced our old carpeting with pergo hardwood, I ripped up the old carpet to save a couple of hundred, talk about tedious.

Not sure how hard it is, and Don't want to find out either.
Having 3 Rooms done in about 2 weeks. Cost Including Carpet is $2800

But Most places here in NY, Include it Free when you Buy the Carpet.

If you replace carpet with hardwood though, they'll give you a break on the bill if you rip up the carpeting yourself.

Pain in the butt especially not knowing the shortcuts. Cutting and seaming probably cause the most difficulty. I let the pros do it even though I do most of my projects my self. Just fixed a brake line on a work vehicle for 12 bucks. Saved 125 by doing it myself, took 2 hours.

the hardest thing in deciding between doing something yourself and having someone do it is the time involved.....if it will take me 40 hours and $500 materials to do something that I can have done professionally for $1,500....then I will pay someone and get a better result.

I guess everyone's threshhold is different.....

i recently agreed to paint my entire house (interior) to save $7000 (less cost of paint)

I've renovated a few properties and have concluded there are a few things that I'd rather not fuck with:

NEVER install a garage door (that spring could rip your fucking arm off)

Carpet installation - unless you know how to use that knee board thing they use to stretch it...and get the carpt to attach to the tack/nail strip. It will be fucked up, there will be loose pockets and you will likely end up paying later to get it done right.

Plumbing (outside of simple stuff, like flush kits).

If you get someone else to do it, make sure they use a power stretcher. If they don't use power stretchers don't hire them.

Thanks everyone...I really appreciate it. After listening to all your comments, I think I will bag the idea of doing it myself. I didn't know that some places install it for free when you buy it. Thanks!

Find it just as easy to lay carpet as to munch on it.

Can't believe somebody hasn't said that yet.

I have limited experience with it....I used to occasionally help a carpet layer buddy doing it. Ripping up old carpet, tack strip, etc. is easy....you can't really screw that up, too badly !

I installed that thin indoor/outdoor stuff in my basement easily and seamed it perfectly...that doesn't need a power stretcher or knee kicker.

An amateur won't have the tools or knowledge to DIY with a thicker carpet...esp. stuff like a seaming iron and all the other tools involved.

Carpet layers are renegades that work largely for cash under the table....sort of a no tax thing and the guys are of iffy character....most do take pride in their work. It requires skill to do it well, and the proper tools. Not a great DIY thing, IMO !

Easy to fuck this up with no experience !

Installation is not free. You are paying for it somewhere
