personally I think it is an upgrade over Uribe, if that is possible. Tejada showed a lot of leadership with the Padres and came up with a ton of clutch hits. (not that Uribe didn't) but your getting a guy who is going to be hitting for more average rather than the HR or K scenario Uribe brings.
Interesting you should ask. While I was extremely disappointed to see the Giants lose Uribe, the first shortstop I looked at when seeing who was available was Tejada and hoped the Giants would pick him up. I think a 1 year contract for $6.5 million is appropriate and giving Uribe a 3 year contract would not have been. I agree that Tejada, if he can remain healthy, will not only show leadership but is a clutch hitter and a better hitter for average. What the Giants lose is a bit of range and versatility on defense with Tejada and with Renteria not available, the Giants are thin at shortstop now.
Also, yesterday, I think the Giants were smart in signing Pat Burrell to a 1 year contract at a very reduced price. His clubhouse leadership helped prepare the Giants young players for the September drive and his relationship with Aubrey Huff (who by the way is now signed to a $22 million 2 year contract - damn Dodgers GM trying his best to break up the Giants) keeps the team together. There are still 8 players that need to be made offers by the end of today or they could go to arbitration, including Andres Torres, Jonathan Sanchez, Cody Ross, Javier Lopez, Santiago Casilla, Ramon Ramirez, Mike Fontenot and Chris Ray. It will be a very busy day for GM Brian Sabean.
