Very cool thread, Dante.
I might choose London in late 1940, during the Blitz. With the Luftwaffe bombing the city 57 nights in a row, I imagine a guy would witness a lot of heart rending scenes: crumbling buildings, fire bombings, dead and dying civilians, and the destruction of entire sections of the city.
But you'd also witness some magnificent, triumph of the human spirit type things. The entire populace pulling together to help one another, the bravery of the RAF pilots ("never in the history of warfare have so many owed so much to so few") and the British resolve not to surrender to the Nazis, whatever the cost. Plus, Winston Churchill making those stirring, defiant speeches despite the fact that England stood alone against all of Nazi occupied Europe.
