There is a 2 p.m. deadline for a contract extension for Adrian Gonzalez. No news on a deal yet. But keep these things in mind:
• The Sox can still go ahead with the deal without an extension. But they would have to have a strong indication that a deal can get done.
• Waiting to announce the extension until after Opening Day could help save money on the luxury tax. That's what happened with Josh Beckett last year. The luxury tax is based on the average annual value of contracts as of Opening Day.
• Or they could just make a deal now and get it over with.
As information becomes available, we'll keep you posted.
