OT Does unemployment insurance cause people to turn down jobs that would actually net them less money?

I'm contemplating retirement and am currently collecting unemployment insurance since being downsized in July. I collect $405 a week and I must admit I have turned down a few jobs that I otherwise probably would have taken. Now it looks like another extension is going to pass. It seems it's easier to just kick back and collect. I can meet all my monthly expenses collecting this insurance. Thoughts?

It seems it's easier...

really?

I would think it would be harder to lay on the couch all day and feel guilty about leaching off taxpayers. Must be hell asking millionaires to pay more taxes while they pay all your living expenses. I don't know how people can do it.

$400 a week isn't "great" but yes if you trim expenses well enough you can get by for awhile.

I can't blame anyone for taking work that pays less than what they'd receive "on unemployment". But yes it is inflating the unemployment figures and (theoretically) the wages will rise if the position can't be filled at the low payrate. Problem is there are so many people out of work that someone somewhere gets desperate enough and "just takes it".

I would like to see the weekly unemployment benefit decrease over time - maybe 1% a week and that way there is eventually a point in time where if someone hasn't found work it starts to make sense for them to "take something". I know too many people that are on "fun employment" (they're on vacation) although I know for many people it is difficult for them right now and I certainly feel for them as well.

I say go for it Harrington,
I'm currently drawing UI and have been for 16 of the last 22 months. The way it's set up I will be eligible to draw for another 12 or 13, this makes me a seasoned veteran when it comes to unemployment. Let me give you some insight on being successfully unemployed. First off being unemployed is a great time to catch up on home improvements, honey do's and other projects around the house. But let me warn you: Don't be too ambitious. You see if you get up every morning and put in 8 hrs per day, you will only be making $10/hr. and $10/hr. Sucks! What you want to do is sleep in every morning then get up and drink your coffee while watching the morning news, then hack around on the internet for a while then get your ass to work. If you only work 16 hrs. per week then you are making $25/hr. If you really want to make the 'Big Bucks' then only put in 10 hrs. per week and you'll be making $40/hr. Not bad huh?
Don't feel guilty at all about leaching off the 'Tax Payers' because drawing UI does not exempt you from paying taxes, you're still a Tax Payer!
Now I'm sure you've heard some hard working Americans call for those of us drawing UI to do community service. NOPE! Community service is for felons and being unemployed is not a crime. However receiving pay while hanging out on internet forums all day instead of doing your job, quite possibly is!
Best of Luck to you Harry, and I'll see you down in the unemployment line!

You can live on $400 a week??

That's about three days budget for us and we're pretty average to middlin' lifestyle

Does that include your danky bud and fabreze costs?

truly an inspirational story

maybe you should write a book on how anyone can sit on their a$$ and live the life just like you !! at least then you would be making an attempt in life.

you are a fine example of the downfall of the country, hell if we had more people like you from the previous 2 generations, who knows -- maybe we'd all be speaking german.

on the bright side, good thing you weren't born a broad b/c who knows how many kids you would have now while pulling down welfare checks - after all, "mo kids mo money" right ??

at the end of the day, don't you have any self respect ?? do you have any sense of self worth just being a sloth and gaming the system ??

what kind of example are you setting for your kid(s) ??

i really don't get it, but then again, if someone is happy kicking back on $400 per wk at your age, i think there are bigger issues.

nothing comes easy and these certainly are not easy times -- but contemplating sitting on your ass vs getting out here and making an effort and seeing what other doors might open as a result -- there should be no contest, get out there and work instead of watching jerry springer and posting on the RX

just my .02

Well sir I do welcome any and all opinions and appreciate and do understand your take but something else I should add. I don't have to work and have plenty of money saved to live out my life very comfortably. I didn't choose to lose my job after working at my company for 26 years. After my UI runs out I will start drawing on my investments and be fine.

its not much money, but if you can make it work, it sure makes sense. sure, people are gonna be upset and complaining about people taking hard earned tax dollars to sit on their asses... BUT if you havent noticed yet, the us gov literally throws away tons of tax money on bullshit all the time. I AM SURE THEY CAN AFFORD paying you 400 a week. all the hard earned tax dollars you have put into the system for all the bs spending is just coming back. if banks are getting bailed out by billions of fresh straight from the mint $$$$, I AM SURE they dont give a fuck about printing more money and giving it to you. just my 2 cents

If Harrington was trying to "pull a fast one" on the system that might be appropriate but he isn't. He has every right to do what he is doing.

Why do you even start these threads when you know that 95% of the people who post in them are going to rag you? If I were you I would just collect my check and stay quite about it...I am not in your shoes or trying to judge you but to me it seems as though you are almost proud of the fact that you are on unemployment.

I've got 3 friends on UI...for a 1yr right now...(all 50+ yrs of age...all down sided)

I have NO problem w/ them collecting....

What I have a problem w/ is when the economy was GREAT-GOOD...and to this DAY..

NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE SAYS A WORD ABOUT THOSE WHO STEAL, CHEAT and GOUGE...the system

ie.....FOOD STAMPS....WELFARE STUFF....WICK...etc...

still status quo....................................wrong

carry on...I'm done
