The Boston Globe first reported the news of the impending seven-year, $142 million contract Thursday night. The deal would be contingent on Crawford's passing a physical.

Crawford was considered the top position player on the free-agency market this winter, just ahead of outfielder Jayson Werth, who signed with the Washington Nationals on Sunday for seven years and $126 million.

Earlier Thursday, sources close to Crawford told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Mark Saxon that the free agent was leaning toward signing with the Los Angeles Angels. Multiple baseball sources told ESPNLosAngeles.com and ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that they expected Crawford to end up in Anaheim.

Rotoworld:

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have reached agreement on a seven-year, $142 million contract with Carl Crawford.

The Red Sox must have learned Wednesday that the Angels were beginning to move aggressively. So they pounced. It's a shocking amount of money, but probably fitting in a market where Jayson Werth is handed a seven-year, $126 million deal. The 29-year-old Crawford batted .307/.356/.495 this past year with 19 home runs and 47 stolen bases for Tampa Bay. He's an excellent defensive outfielder and is now part of a massive roster improvement in Boston. That lineup suddenly looks really, really good.

that is some unreal money...

Crawford had the 'perfect storm'...

1st the werth contract set the stage...then a bidding war for his services...

& in the end the angels were unwilling to make him the richest outfielder in mlb history...as the red sox swept in and unloaded that contract...

Yankees on the clock...cliff lee?

It's tough to hate the Yankees for overspending while still liking the Red Sox at this point.

It’s the Yankees’ move after Red Sox add Crawford

Boston’s big investment comes with big ramifications, and since the market’s top position player is off the board, several pieces should fall into place over the next couple of weeks.

- The Yankees pretty much have to do what it takes to land Cliff Lee now, and that probably means upping the ante to seven years. After all, that’s what Crawford and Jayson
Werth received. The only viable plan B for the Bombers is Zack Greinke, and the Yankees would face stiff competition for him as well.

- The top remaining position player on the board, Adrian Beltre, seems destined for Anaheim. The Angels have plenty of money to spend and a clear need at third base. All indications were that Crawford was their top priority, and they’re going to be very disappointed to have missed out on him. However, they could end up spending $14 million per year on Beltre and use the rest of the money earmarked for Crawford on bullpen help. They’re the clear favorites for Rafael Soriano now.

I move Crawford to lead off and put Gonzo at #3 and you have to put Youk #4, because you can get the 1st to be L,R,L,R,L and put Ellsbury at #7 or #9.

Huge Yankees Fan here.... and even though you make some good points
Red Sox Got a lot better.......

The Only Key to make the Yanks a Better Team, will be Lee.

So they better offer him the Magic # "7" years......otherwise, the Red Sox are the Favs for AL East and WS.

LOL. It's like a fantasy team. Yanks are probably pissed at the deemed necessary Jeter signing. If they aren't able to sign Lee they will be in bad shape.

Yeah, that infield of A-Rod, Jeter, Cano, and Tex is laughable.
