I didn't

I thought Thomas Jefferson ( guess)

Some coin guy doesn't want his kids to inherit his coin collection because they don't know history.

I bet your average doctor couldn't answer that question !

One must realize, that many of our youngsters today have no real sense of value, for anything. Having said that, I have met a few who could stand toe to toe with many knowledgeable collectors. Unfortunately, none belong to my siblings. One must have an appreciation for the study of history. I think the average teenager today, if asked could not tell you who the second president of the United States was.

My Chiildren will not inherit my collection....

And let me tell you why...

I have tried for years to get them interested. It did not happen. I took them to local b&M stores, finding exciting examples of coins, which they could give a sh&it..
I tried to show 2 examples with one type of coin with a difference....meant nothing..

They only ever said, "is it silver"? ...or is it "gold"....never with year or mintmark..

They are hopeless...I have tried..they dont even say they need better understanding... it's not. They are hopeless..and will not get my coins. I would rather GIVE them away, than have them touch them..

so..I am selling every one on this bst.....

John Adams. John Quincy Adams was 4-6. I used to have em all memorized. Can't remember the 3rd for the life of me. Was it Jefferson?

My wife wants me to quit drinking.

I should tell her I'll quit for a year if she can tell who me the 2nd POTUS was.

Answer is John Adams....I'd even give her Samuel Adams.

force your kid to collect coins and know history that way , or I cut you out of the will !

The current president changes every four to eight years. The past ones don't ever change. I would bet my entire net worth more than 10% of Americans know that one

Throughout elementary school I had educational placemats at the kitchen table and memorized all presidents, a lot of world capitals and a good chunk of the periodic table. By eighth grade I made a complete turn around and virtually failed out of school, but I still could name at least 30 presidents

I think it would be close to 10%, make it 30% I'll take take the under. I missed it myself and I'm not bad with History, Jake blew it too !

Memorizing such a list does demonstrate intelligence as in you can do it. It's useless info, though. State capitals are useless to know. not every state capital is the largest city. Las Vegas isn't the capital of Nevada, Juneau is the capital of Alaska but a small town of 30,000 or so.

Maybe memorize the second largest city in every state alphabetically ?

Who cares ?

The presidents in order or state capitals are irrelevant shit in reality. Is my Dentist a dope if doesn't know John Adams was the 2nd POTUS or if he thinks LV is the capital of Nv ?

I rebelled at having to memorize stupid shvt like state capitals. Who cares what the capital city of NH is ? I once was forced to know that crap, 30 years later ...I don't remember or care.

The more people who take an interest in not being ignorant and uneducated the better our communities are. History is definitely a part of that

Obviously memorizing government figures isn't what matters. What matters is understanding how our government operates, both in 2010 and 1780

Knowing that Adams was the first Vice President and second President is the same as remembering sports statistics and Super Bowl champions. It doesn't measure how much a person understands the sport, but once we've heard them a few times, for many of us, they stick around in our head

I'll give you that presidents and VP's ( even early ones) are a better thing for our children to rote memorize than SB winners....but it isn't that different.

Still ( to me) it isn't the subject so much, more the ability to do it. The actual content of capitals and dead Presidents means little, it could just as well be SB winners.

I have no idea who won SB # 13. I could at least guess that Lincoln was about POTUS #13.
