Playoffs are still in Titans' picture

By Jim Wyatt • GANNETT TENNESSEE • December 14, 2010
NASHVILLE — The Titans have little reason for optimism thanks to a six-game losing streak, yet as crazy as it sounds they are still alive in the AFC playoff race.
With three games remaining, however, the Titans need a lot of things to fall into place to stay that way.
“Mathematically, there is still a chance,’’ Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday. “So you just keep playing.’’
The Titans need to win out — vs. Houston, at Kansas City, at Indianapolis — to keep any scenario alive, and based on how they’ve played lately, that might be the hard part.
They would also need the Jaguars (8-5) to lose their final three games to finish at 8-8, and the Colts (7-6) would need to beat the Jaguars next Sunday before losing their final two games.

Under that scenario, involving a tie with three or more teams, the Titans would win a tiebreaker based on their record vs. common opponents.

Far-fetched? Yes, but still possible. Fisher expects a strong finish, beginning with Sunday’s home finale against the Texans, who beat the Titans 20-0 on Nov. 28.

“We’re going to come back and have fun and play an opponent that shut us out three or four weeks ago,’’ Fisher said. “Playing the game excites guys, period.’’

Fisher also reiterated the younger players could see more action down the stretch.

“We have a few guys that are banged up. … Would it be better for us to play a younger guy that is not banged up that might give you a better chance to be successful?” Fisher said. “In addition to that it gives you a chance to look at a younger player. … You have to look at the big picture
