Police: Las Vegas casino chip heist may total $2M

The Associated Press
Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010 | 10:47 a.m.
Las Vegas police are looking for an armed casino bandit who made off on a motorcycle with perhaps $2 million worth of gambling chips from the posh Bellagio hotel-casino.
Las Vegas police Lt. Clinton Nichols told The Associated Press that detectives were reviewing video and camera images of the robbery a little before 4 a.m. Tuesday at the Las Vegas Strip resort.
No shots were fired and no one was injured.
Nichols calls the robbery about as quick as you can do it.
He says the man wore a full-face motorcycle helmet and leather jacket.
He went to the casino pit area, displayed the gun, demanded chips, and fled the casino before speeding away on Flamingo Road on a black sport-style motorcycle.

I remember a guy walking into the Sahara who was dressed in black with a black stetson hat on that sort of covered his face. He went to the cashiers cage after passing me, and since they suspected they were stolen $100 chips, they stalled him for as long as possible. Security surrounded the guy while he was at the cage, but he was cool as a cucumber and just silently demanded his money.

A pit boss I knew came up next to me and I asked him what was going on. He told me about the stolen chips, and although they were sure he wasn't involved with the theft, they were positive that he was hired to cash in the chips for a percentage. He must have been at the cage for 45 minutes until they finally gave him the money when he threatened to call gaming.

Any way he'll be able to cash them? Assume they are $1k or $5k chips. How would you go about turning those into cash.

So, how would you fence something like this? It's gonna take forever to cash that much in chips in without raising eyebrows

seems like the chips would have chips in them, i mean even regular currency has those strips. Seems like casinos would get with the times.
