Vegas Oddsmakers Have Feeling About Phillies
Team Now Favored To Win World Series
Jason R. Latham, Managing Editor
Cliff Lee’s decision to return to the Philadelphia Phillies has not only altered the team’s destiny, but it’s also an immediate game-changer in Las Vegas sportsbooks.
Bettors arriving to the Las Vegas Hilton found that Lee’s move vaunted the Phillies to the top of the board, with 9-to-5 odds to win the 2011 World Series.
Sportsbook Director Jay Kornegay said before the Lee signing, the Phillies odds were 6-to-1 and the team was third on the board behind the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
Lee, 32, joins a Phillies rotation that includes fellow aces Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels.
His decision to reject offers by the Yankees and Texas Rangers has been compared by some to Lebron James’ move to join fellow all-stars with the Miami Heat.
Lee, however, left millions of dollars on the table and, although his free agency was followed by baseball fans, it didn’t come close to the hype surrounding James’ much-maligned “Decision.”
