Cam Newton while at Westlake High. The ball is not in the proper place here back in high school. It should be higher, up by his ear hole. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

FLOWERY BRANCH – Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, of Auburn and Westlake High, needs to stay in college and work on his God awful mechanics, according to Russ Lande, a former NFL Scout, who heads the War Room for the Sporting News.
(Seems like some were saying the same thing about Tim Tebow’s awful mechanics before he was selected in the first round last year.)
Lande, who had his early Mock Draft up in Sporting News Today on Wednesday, doesn’t have Newton going in the first round. He does have three other quarterbacks being selected in the first round.
Lande considers Newton to be two to three years away from being ready to play in the NFL as a traditional quarterback.
Before the Auburn-Alabama game, they showed highlights of Newton’s poor mechanics, especially his lazy footwork. Lande has him rated as the 51st player in his Super 99.
Here are some of the key picks in Lande’s early Mock. He has the Falcons taking an offensive tackle:
1. Carolina: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford.
5. Buffalo: Jake Locker, QB, Washington.
9. Tennessee: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia.
12. Minnesota: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas.
31. Atlanta: Gabe Carmiri, OT, Wisconsin.

He really thinks Locker is #5? The kid seems to be the most over-rated prospect in this upcoming draft. I'd take Mallett over him too.

I do agree on Newton though, and he would get shredded if he has to become a pocket passer. No way does he have the current skills to have a 3-4 second pocket and deliver the ball accurately.
