James Taylor and by a lot..Taylor taught Carly Simon how to be a pro and made her the star she has been for years.

A five-time Grammy Award winner, Taylor was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
Taylor achieved his major breakthrough in 1970 with the #3 single "Fire and Rain" and had his first #1 hit the following year with "You've Got a Friend", a recording of Carole King's classic song. His 1976 Greatest Hits album was certified Diamond and has sold 12 million US copies. Following his 1977 album, JT, he has retained a large audience over the decades. His commercial achievements declined slightly until a big resurgence during the late 1990s and 2000s, when some of his best-selling and most-awarded albums (including Hourglass, October Road and Covers) were released.

Taylor are about a month apart in age.

Chapin by miles for me. I was never a big JT fan and a bit too young for Croce.

Cat Stevens was better than all 3 tho

Ride or die with Jim Croce...Could listen to Operator and Walkin back to Georgia all day. Was just listening to him in the car last night too. Young so I never really got introduced to the other two, like James Taylor but just don't know too much about them

James Taylor by far. The other two are outstanding as well....but Taylor wins this easily....

Hate to disagree with most of you, but Harry Chapin for me...what a great storyteller with the music....

I think you need to include Don McLean in this mix:

Though I think any objective vote would have to go to James Taylor, he clearly rises above the rest when you look at the totality of his work. Chapin and
McLean are closer to one hit wonders.
