Down 2. 2 seconds left. You catch a pass on your side of the court and heave up a horrible shot that has no chance. The ball hits at about the free throw line on the other side as time expires, then the ball bounces up and in. Does it count at all? Does it count as 2? 3? What the heck is the rule?

My answer would be yes but I have nothing to back it up. This is the nba rule of a fg. Guess it is open for interpretation.

a. A legal field goal or free throw attempt shall be scored when a live ball from the playing area enters the basket from above and remains in or passes through the net. GL finding an answer.

As long as the player is in bounds than i don't see why it wouldn't count.

When someone shoots the ball as time expires....whoever gets the ball still gets a rebound right? If that is the case then I guess play continues after the ball hits the rim/backboard....with that logic I would say yes it counts.

but IMO it shouldn't and I think it if actually happened in the game the whistles would blow as soon as it hit the ground

Hmmm never thought of this actually.

I would think if it hit the floor as time expires, game over. If it hit the floor with time left and hit inside the 3pt line it would count as 2.

I'm just guessing but that sounds right to me.

Wouldn't count, game ends when the ball hits the court.

Think of it like when the shot clock expires and it's an air ball. When the balls misses the rim they don't wait until it hits the floor to then see if it hits the rim or go in before someone touches it.

They actually talk about this very question on ESPN with some good answers.

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/6226/buzzer-beating-bounce-in

"... any time a live ball is in flight from the playing court, the goal, if made, shall count, even if time expires or the official's whistle sounds." is a rule from the NBA. To me that reads once the ball bounces it is no longer in flight because it stops but someone agree/disagree.

This is actually a good question.

I'm the official scorekeeper for the local division 3 NCAA men's
(and women's) home games for one of the local Universities.

I will ask the head ref at our next game and see what he says...

I'm not sure, I'd guess it would count, but I don't know.

Good question. But in the described scenario, I would say there is almost ZERO chance it could happen. First of all, the ball would have to be launched high in the air from 3/4 court to have the right bounce and angle to go in the hoop. 2nd, if the ball is shot that high in the air, chances are, a player is gonna get their hands on it before it ever hits the ground.

Good job completely missing the point of the question.

It's nowhere near as difficult as you make it sound....In fact, it's one of our staple scoring plays!

A shot clock expiring is a different case than the clock expiring at the end of a period after a ball is shot. Think of it, when a ball leaves the shooter's hand the clock can go off at the end of the period yet the shot can still count.

A shot clock expiring stops the play at the time the clock expires. A shot at the end of the period is not disqualified at the time the clock expires.

The floor has nothing to do with it. Remember, a ball can hit a backboard after the end of the period and still count. It should still count after the ball bounces off the floor as well.
