I'm actually of the belief that he wrote (and performed) some of his best songs at the tail end of his life with his band The Mescaleros...

This is from a gig in Bridgewater, UK about 5 weeks before his death on Dec 22, 2002.

Saw the Clash 9 times. Regret not making an effort to see The Mescaleros.

i went to HOB once to see the Mescaleros and rolled up around 930ish only to find out they went on like at 8pm. i wasnt of concert age to see the Clash but i still listen all the time to their albums.

mescaleros were fantastic....the clash were iconic....caught one of joes last shows he ever did w/them in brooklyn...seems like i was strappin my boots on to go see that show just the other day....man, has it been that long?

I assume you're referring to the 5 night stretch Joe and the Mescaleros did in early April 2002 at St Ann's Warehouse. I downloaded audience recordings from each night via dimeadozen.org a few years ago. Your post motivated me to locate those (amongst the hundreds of others I've downloaded and burned).

Anyway, here's a nice recording and slide show that's apt for today...
