Sounds like something I might like but her literary interests and mine aren't always eye-to-eye. Anyone with any input?

Never read it. I thought it was supposed to be a kid's book or am I confusing it with something else?

I believe it's one of those books like "The Da Vinci Code" where readers either REALLY love it or REALLY hate it. I've not read it, but I know it has a large and passionate group of fans.

Look it up on Amazon. Seems like one of those "inspirational" type novels that are more appealing to women. Gets 4 stars which is pretty good, but I'm wondering if maybe she wants to read it herself.

She read it already and has other books by the same author.

The Alchemist (Portuguese: O Alquimista) is an allegorical novel by Paulo Coelho first published in 1988. It has been hailed as a modern classic.[1][2] The Alchemist was originally written in Portuguese and has since been translated into 67 languages, winning the Guinness World Record for most translated book by a living author.[3] It has sold more than 65 million copies in more than 150 countries, becoming one of the best-selling books in history.[4]

Plot

The Alchemist details the journey of a young Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago. Santiago, believing a recurring dream to be prophetic, decides to travel to the pyramids of Egypt to find treasure. On the way, he encounters love, danger, opportunity and disaster. One of the significant characters that he meets is an old king named Melchizedek who tells him that "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." This is the core philosophy and motif of the book.

So I read close to the whole book on the flight here. It's okay. I feel the end will be a big payoff that will help me decide whether I like it or hate it. Either way, it is interesting and a fairly quick read which I like. We'll see how it turns out.
