Atlanta Hawks assistant coach Nick Van Exel’s 20-year-old son, Nickey Van Exel, was accused of murdering a friend and was arrested Wednesday night.

Dallas Police spokesman Craig Miller told CBS affiliate NewsRadio 1080 KRLD in Dallas-Fort Worth Thursday that Van Exel is accused of shooting longtime friend Bradley Eyo, 23, Sunday in Garland, Texas, and thereafter dumped the body near Lake Ray Hubbard.

Police told the Associated Press that Eyo was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Van Exel’s shotgun used for the murder has yet to be recovered. Several of Eyo’s possessions have also gone missing, leading police to believe a theft took place, Miller told NewsRadio 1080 KRLD.

Although the police are still early in their investigation, Miller said that Van Exel is cooperating.

Paul Johnson, Van Exel’s lawyer, told NewsRadio 1080 KRLD that his client confessed to the police that he killed Eyo when a shotgun they were playing with accidentally went off. Van Exel said he did not know the gun, which belonged to his stepfather, was loaded.

"It's a real sad situation," Johnson told the AP. "Emotions are running high, and, obviously, we recognize that some very bad decisions were made on how he responded."

Van Exel is being held at Dallas’ Lew Sterrett Justice Center on $1 million bail. Van Exel has yet to appear in court or enter a plea.

WFAA.com out of Dallas is reporting that the son of former NBA All-Star Nick Van Exel has confessed to murdering his neighbor in Texas on Wednesday night.
Nickey Van Exel, son of former Dallas Mavericks player Nick Van Exel, was arrested Wednesday night in connection with a recent murder.
Bradley Bassey Eyo was found shot to death near Lake Ray Hubbard the day after Christmas. Investigators determined he was murdered at a Garland home in the 6900 block of George Brown Drive and his body later dumped at the lake, less than a mile away.
Police said 20-year-old Nickey Van Exel turned himself in Wednesday and confessed to the crime. He's a neighbor of the victim.
WFAA.com also reports that Nickey Van Exel is being held on a $1 million bond.

The elder Van Exel, who is just 39 years old, retired after the 2005-2006 NBA season after playing 13 seasons in the NBA. He spent his early years with the Los Angeles Lakers before bouncing around the Western Conference, making stops with the Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs. He averaged 14.4 points and 6.6 assists for his career and made an All-Star game in 1998.

Known for his explosive scoring ability and quickness off the dribble as a player, Van Exel joined the Atlanta Hawks coaching staff as Player Development Instructor this fall.

IMHO, such programs are in part deliberately contrived by law enforcement agencies to publicize and promote dumb behavior by people who are in police encounters.

It's a counter to the many television programs with fictional characters (Law and Order mainly) where citizens routinely invoke their right to silence, their right to not have police enter their homes and their right to not be questioned without an attorney present.
