Let me first say that both Leslie Frazier and Jason Garrett are deserving of staying on as HC of their teams.

I dont believe that Minnesota has to interview anyone else because Frazier is a minority.
Dallas has to go through the motions of interviewing a minority who will not get the job because Garrett has already been picked.

This makes no sense to me at all.

its a ridiculous rule, I think it was dennis green who refused a HC interview because he said the team knew who they wanted but had to interview a minority.

I think I want my money back!

It really should be removed when a team hires an interim coach....at the very least.

I understand the rule, but I would think that NFL owners look past the colors of ones skin to decide whom is best fit to win their team games. Millions of dollars go into the decision.

To make the rule even more dumb, as hard as it is to believe, the Vikings ARE indeed required to interview another black person besides Frazier before officially naming Frazier the coach.

Yes I know.
Its dumb.

The Vikings are not exempt despite hiring Frazier.

At some time, there was a definite lack of minorities in upper management in the NFL. The rule helped to at least get names of qualified candidates out to teams, who might forever stay under the radar. The benefits are a lot lower now, but to a billion dollar business, the cost of compliance is pretty damn low, so as far as silly hoops required to jump through, this isn't one that stands out to me

The Afro-American population of the US is 40 million/ 12.3% of the total

The Afro-American population in the NFL is 78% of the total active players

The Afro-American NFL head coaches totaled 8 (two interims) at season's end=25% of 32 NFL franchises

The percentage of Afro-american NFL head coaches is 2x that of the AA US population pct. ( 25% vs 12%)

The percentage of Afro-American NFL players is 6.5x that of the AA US population pct. ( 78% vs 12%)

Dennis Green already knew that they were who we thought they were.

Well, when an Afro-American....or black dude (whatever he chooses to be called) buys a NFL team, then HE can hire whoever the hell he wants....and interview whoever the hell he wants.

It's 2011....we have a f'ing black POTUS. GET OVER IT! MOVE ON!!!

NFL owners should not be forced to interview or hire ANYONE they do not want to.... This is America! Capitalism at it's finest!

Should they be allowed to bar all black people from employment in management positions?

It wasn't that long ago when enough customers felt something like that was happening to the point that it could have very well hurt profits of the league. Coming up with a rule like this to try to keep those people as customers is a part of capitalism. It may have reached the point where the rule is no longer needed, but the hardship that comes with compliance is extremely small

The free-market says Jerry Jones or anyone who doesn't like it can always take their team to the UFL

They should be allowed to do whatever they want cause they own the team/business. They should be able to hire whoever they feel is most qualified.

I'm happy to work with any race, any religion, any sex, etc, but a business owner should be able to make his own decisions.

Tom, I'm sorry you feel that way. You should try living in 2011....oh, that is the reality. We have to appease everyone who feels they are slighted.

I'm sorry. I'm white. I have a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Florida, a Fire Science Degree, I am an Officer in the Reserves, I am a paramedic (not an EMT...but a paramedic), I have state of Florida certifications in: Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor, Fire Investigator, and Pump Operator. It took me FIVE years to get on the JFRD....but there were non-white members of my hiring class who had....a high school diploma.

Yeah. You're right....NFL owners should have to interview someone they know they aren't going to hire....just so Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton can sleep well at night....

I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. Can you cite a source?

CB,
My understanding is that fire departments aren't being asked to maximize profits the same way sports teams are. The NFL instituted this rule to try to help maximize profits because customers were questioning and criticizing the leagues hiring practices. It doesn't matter if the questions and criticisms were legitimate or not, all that matters is that the league figure out a way to keep them as customers. I don't know if the rule helped or not, but I do know that implementing it was absolutely capitalism

Not sure what you're apology is for, but it's accepted

Why aren't the Cowboys allowed to have 200 players on their payroll? Shouldn't they be allowed to hire as many as they want, if that's what they decide is best?

NFL teams do not operate independently from one another, thus there are some rules that govern how they all interact together
