Gambler at Star City casino served 42 beers in one session

A BOOZE-LOVING card player used his "poker face" to fool Star City Casino staff into serving him 42 beers in a single 17-hour sitting.

The unnamed gambler put in a marathon innings, downing five beers every two hours.
Three waiters were happy to oblige the cashed-up player with as many drinks as he requested and failed to keep track of the seriously high level of alcohol the man was ingesting as he sat at the same card table in the main gaming floor from 2.30am.
It was not until the card table closed at 7am that Star City staff realised the man was wildly intoxicated.
"He didn't appear to be steady on his feet. He was dozing off at the table and the manager had to help him collect his chips so he could cash them in," bar waiter Helen Mikhael-Ghanime, who was sacked for her role in serving the man 15 beers in seven hours, said.

Star City Casino has been fined $10,000 for breaching liquor laws, which ban casino operators from allowing an intoxicated person to gamble.
When the Casino Liquor and Gaming Control Authority demanded that Star City show cause, the casino argued that its staff could not tell the gambler was drunk because of his poker face.
"The nature of poker is that players tend to be ... very controlled in their facial expressions and body movements," Star City's leaked letter to the authority states.
"This level of control means that many of the visible signs that a person ... is affected by alcohol may be minimised."
In internal investigations, Star City management discovered there was no formal communication between bar staff, managers and security staff about the number of drinks each patron consumed.
The three wait staff who served the man 31 of the 42 drinks - from 2.29pm on December 31, 2008 until 7.26am on January 1, 2009 - have been sacked or demoted.
Leaked documents reveal staff member Frankie Yuen, who served the man 11 drinks over five hours, had "no recollection of serving the patron".Mr Yuen was demoted and transferred to the Garden Buffet breakfast service.
Ms Mikhael-Ghanime said she was unfairly sacked:
"Of all the cocktail servers, dealers, security guards, bar supervisors, pit managers on duty that night, I was the only one terminated," she said.
"Why wasn't anyone else accountable out of all the other employees who were responsible?"
The man, whose identity has not been revealed, bought the remaining 12 low-alcoholic beers from Star City's Bluff Bar.
But the strength of the other 30 beers is not known. "We are unable to ascertain from our records the type of beer that was purchased from the cocktail waiters," Star City said.
The authority said the $10,000 fine had been reduced because of Star City's otherwise good record in dealing with drunken gamblers.
It evicted 6717 intoxicated patrons in 2008.
"[The authority] considers this matter to be a serious breach of Star City's responsible service of alcohol obligations," the authority said to Star City.
"In determining the pecuniary penalty, due consideration was given to Star City's record in relation to the responsible service of alcohol and the action taken to prevent similar incidents in the future."

Don't find this shocking whatsoever.............

I recall being 22 years old and having between 25-40 beers in a 12 HOUR session playing roulette at the EL RANCHO(lost $1,000 but got it back betting a Lou Holtz coached Arkansas team later that night in their bowl game)

When young, 42 beers in 17 hours is not a lot of beer for many and sure more than a few on this site have shattered that record.

The best part is that he still had chips to cash in.

It is even less shocking considering:
"The man... bought the remaining 12 low-alcoholic beers from Star City's Bluff Bar.
But the strength of the other 30 beers is not known."

I agree. A friend of mine would have 30 Coronas on a CFB saturday at mandaly regularly. This is not a shock at all.

.......and you probably put in only sessions of 5-6 hours, making this even more impressive.

Not sure I could have done it in that time frame, but back in the day............................

If this was in the States, I would say I know the person.

Use to tailgate with someone that would have anywhere from 24-48 Beers before he got to the game.
He was Fun sometimes, but other times he would get into a fight when we were seated.

I could drink an endless amount of beer at only 2.5 per hour.

You would be dead eventually. The body only has the capability of processing the alcohol in 1 beer per hour. If your not the fortunate kind who throws up, you'd be that poor bastard we read about every year who died from alcohol poisoning at Spring Break.

I got cut off at wild bills in vegas once. No idea how long I had been up and drinking but all my buddies crashed around 2-3 am. ended up at a black jack table with another young kid who had just landed with his dad and we started pounding shots seemed like we were one of the few people gambling at 4 am or so, so the waitress just kept coming and coming. we were getting 2 shots at a time and beer chasers etc, by the time they left it was around 6 am and i was at the table by myself, after a few hands i got tired of the rapid fire bj hands since it was just me and dealer at table. I guess i put my elbow on table and nodded off for a second because a security guard came over and told me he thought it was time i went back to my room to sleep for awhile. I convinced him I was fine and moved over to a pai gow table that had a player or 2, but the pit boss cut me off for drinking for like 4 hrs. Pissed me off bc i thought i was solid, but I got on a nice pai gow run and was up around 800-1000 by the time my friends came back to the table around 10am when they started serving me again. ofcourse i order tequilla shots for me and my friends who all end up refusing to take them when they arrive, so I downed 5 shots in a minute and the cycle begun again

You guys say it's no big deal, but just break it down mathematically. The body eliminates only one drink an hour, so he had 23 beers in his system at the end of the binge. That is a dangerous BAC level. Probably close to .40, which can stop your breathing.

Star city is run as badly as it gets. If you are in australia go to melbourne and to the crowne. I think i like that place better then vegas. Top notch all the way around and much better hold em action for much less rake. Im not saying they should be cutting the guy off but saying that his "poker face" is the reason they couldnt figure it out is a joke. People play there for fun mostly.

I get a .0849 for a 200 lb dude

over the .08 limit under the old .10 limit.

I thought it would be more like a.15 to a .20 and be double the limit ? Still no big deal unless the guy was driving.
