Veterinarian Robert ter Horst says the cause of jackdaws' deaths was unclear but that fireworks were set off near the scene on Tuesday night.

The birds were found dead on Wednesday.

Mr Ter Horst says cold weather, difficulties finding food and possible shock from the fireworks could be responsible, leading to the stressed birds either dying from the stress or being run over by vehicles.

Five of the dead jackdaws found in the city of Falkoping were tested. The institute said they died due to "sudden, hard external blows". There were no signs of infection or other illnesses, and there were no external signs indicating a cause of death.

My guess is that it probably has, the media just hasn't hyped it before.

Flocks of birds fly in very tight formation, with the leader up front (naturally)
Now, if something happens to the leader, albeit takes a nose dive, gets hit by something, the rest of the flock follows suit.
Birds not being the smartest of creatures literally play follow the leader.

Well, that's the theory some ornithologist wrote about this morning.

My guess is that it probably has, the media just hasn't hyped it before.

This is what I have been wondering. All (or almost all) of the bird death articles include something like "Mass bird deaths aren't uncommon."

It makes me think that everyone mass bird death is now being reported, so it people are thinking "holy crap! what is with all these mass bird deaths?!?!"

Like I mentioned before, I was reading this no nonsense, well educated ornithologists earlier, and he wrote that this is not uncommon, been going on since pterodactoloids were crashing to earth.
But back in cave man days, there were no algore types preaching "global warming.........."
