Unsure about Thames, Yanks contact Andruw

By Rhett Bollinger / MLB.com

The Yankees have started talks with free-agent outfielder Andruw Jones, Jon Heyman of SI.com and MLB Network tweeted on Friday.
$$:($$No deal is imminent, but the club is seeking a right-handed-hitting outfielder, according to Heyman, adding that the Yankees are concerned about Marcus Thames' outfield defense. Last season, Thames saw action in 82 games but served as designated hitter in 34 of them.
Jones, 33, batted .230 with 19 home runs and 48 RBIs in 107 games with the White Sox last season while seeing time in all three outfield positions and 10 games at designated hitter. He also batted .256 with a .373 on-base percentage and a .558 slugging percentage against left-handers last year.
A five-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner, Jones is a career .256 hitter with 407 home runs and 1,222 RBIs over 15 big league seasons with the Braves, Dodgers, Rangers and White Sox.

which hall of fame is Andruw Jones going to be inducted in? Not even close to being a baseball HOFer

Well I use to think he was a HOFer, but if Barry Bonds, Roger Cleamens, and Jeff Bagwell are not HOFers.

I guess that means they dont have room for a 10 time GG with over 400 homers either.

The HOF has become a joke.

The all-time hits leader, the alltime homerun leader, a pitcher that many feel is the best of all-time. One of the top 5 1st baseman of all-time never getting into the HOF makes it all a joke.

Since 1st base is such a strong position, lets say top 7 to be on the safe side. Regardless, Bagwell not in the HOF is a complete joke.
He was the best 1st baseman I have ever seen.

I did not get to see some of the all-time greats, but since the early 80's, he is the best I have ever seen.

He will get in eventually, this was his first ballot wasnt it?

He only got 41%, barely half of what you need.
The writers are idiots.

Because some think that he MIGHT have took steroids they are punishing him.
He never failed a test, and was not on the Mitchell report.
They are punishing him on a maybe.
Its crazy.

Writers get this assumption on people and call it gospel.
They conclude that Griffey is ok, and Bagwell is not.

They dont have anymore proof that Bagwell did roids then they have proof that Jr did not do them.

Its all in there head who they think may or may not of done them.
They should just get rid of the HOF if they cant do any better then that.

I agree the writers are idiots, look how long it took for Jim Rice to get elected. They have it in their mind that a first ballot is special, I dont get it. You will see that percentage rise steadily in time.

Its all about the roids.

If this roid stuff would have never happened, he would have been as 1st ballot as it gets.
He would have got over 80% on his 1st try.
Just look at his numbers and his defense.
If thats not 1st ballot HOF, I dont know what is.

I can understand BigMac and Palmero not getting in because they have physical proof that they took roids, but you cant punish someone because you think they might have took them.

Bagwells problem was that he was in Houston and not NY, Boston or Chicago.

I dont think that would have made a ton of difference.
Baseball has not historically punished players from small markets if they were superior players.

7 years ago, before the Mitchell report, Bagwell being a 1st ballot HOFer was not even a debatable topic. It was a given.

Based on the way they vote, I highly doubt the writers are smart enough to realize just how much the Astrodome suppressed runs for a few of the years Bagwell was there. Had he played half his games in Boston or Wrigley, his homerun and RBI totals would be a lot higher, but what he did to help the team would be no different

On the other side Jim Rice had the benefit of playing in Boston before they added the 600 Club that stopped the wind from blowing out so much. Hitting behind Boggs and Evans and other guys with great obp gave him so much higher homerun and RBI totals, despite doing less to help the team than other guys with fewer

Despite such great defense, Jones is still behind Fred Lynn. His obp is below league average for his career. Despite 1 200 more plate appearances, Bagwell made only 200 more outs than Jones has throughout his career. For an outfielder with such a short career, that is not Hall-of-Fame offense

This is a great post. I agree Andruw could not get into the HOF on offense alone, but you throw in his defense which was top 2 alltime at his position he would have got in back when the writers had a clue.
