Trevor Hoffman pocketed $59,309,000 in career earnings and never started a game..

Hoffman not a shoo in?

Ok, maybe not like Rivera, you're right.

Definetly a shoo in though.........600+ saves for goodness sakes.

When mediocre players like Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven get elected to the Hall of Fame, Trevor Hoffman should be a first-ballot shoo-in.

OK, maybe Alomar and Blyleven were better than mediocre, I'd even be willing to say they were very good, but, good Lord, neither of them are HOF quality.

Any team would be much better off having Blyleven pitch 5 000 innings for them than Hoffman pitching 1 000. Hard to think he even did more to help his team than Kevin Brown when he was only on the mound 1/3 as much

The two and three inning relievers were more valuable than the one inning guys and I definitely didn't think Sutter and Gossage deserved to make it

By all accounts a great guy with a very good career, just too many pitchers of his generation who were better

There are a lot of Sabermetricians who agree with you completely. On a purely subjective basis, though, I don't. Off the top of my head I can't think of a time when Byleven was even the best pitcher on his staff, much less one of baseball's all-time greats. Guys like Hoffman, Eckersley, Sutter and Gossage had a profound effect on the way the game is played, though. The role had pretty much fully evolved into a pure 9th-inning specialist by the time Rivera came along, but he has certainly been the best in that specialist role.
