Sports in Brief: Rays near deal with Farnsworth

A person familiar with the negotiations said that free-agent reliever Kyle Farnsworth was approaching an agreement on a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. The deal could be agreed to Thursday or Friday and will be worth about $3.25 million, the person said. The person spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been finalized.
AL MVP Josh Hamilton remained hospitalized while showing signs of getting better in a bout with pneumonia.
In a statement, the Texas Rangers said Hamilton was "showing significant improvement" but remained at the hospital for treatment "in order to accelerate his full recovery."
Catcher Koyie Hill and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to an $850,000, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. The 31-year-old signed with the Cubs in 2007 and is entering his fifth season with them. The Cubs also agreed to a minor-league contract with outfielder Reed Johnson.
Outfielder Ryan Raburn and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a $3.4 million, two-year contract. In five major-league seasons, all with Detroit, the 29-year-old has hit .274 with 39 homers and 155 RBIs in 379 games.
Righthander Luke Hochevar and the Kansas City Royals agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.76 million, the same salary he had last year. The deal enabled the Royals to avoid arbitration with Hochevar.
