Betfair (16.3% overall) was the biggest mover in December's Oddschecker top 10, gaining 3% market share over the course of the month to further make up ground on leaders Bet365 (17.2%), which only remained top due to a 1% increase of its own.

With Ladbrokes beginning its trial absence from the odds comparison site, the 9.6% of market clicks the Harrow-based company gained in November was distributed between the remaining bookmakers, and it was Betfair who took the biggest share.

With adverse weather conditions forcing the cancellation of many racing meets, the football market – dominated by Betfair and Bet365 with 14% of clicks each – was the main source of market clicks as 2010 drew to a close.

However, the specials market also had a part to play, with a monstrous 21% share helping Betfair’s cause.
Elsewhere, Stan James continued to slide down the top 10, falling behind Paddy Power after a 2.5% swing between the two bookmakers, while a 0.8% increase for William Hill saw the London-based company move within half a per cent of Stan James’ 8% overall share.

After enjoying an increased share in football bets in November, Victor Chandler saw its share of overall clicks shoot up over the 7% mark, with its share of the football market continuing to trend upwards. Skybet also took its share of the 9.6% surrendered by Ladbrokes, returning to the 5.6% figure with which it ended 2009 before a gradual decline saw its share dip below 5% in November.

Finally, Ladbrokes’ absence meant a new name would feature in the monthly table, and that name was Boylesports. The Irish firm returned to the top ten after a 21-month absence as its 4.3% share was enough to see it into 10th place.

December's top 10 bookmakers on Oddschecker:

1. bet365 17.2%
2. betfair 16.3%
3. Paddy Power 8.2%
4. Stan James 8.0%
5. William Hill 7.7%
6. Victor Chandler 7.0%
7. Skybet 5.6%
8. Coral 5.4%
9. Betfred 4.9%
10. Boylesports 4.3%
