After Brazil flooding, loyalty to the dead

t1larg.graves.gi.jpg

As the death toll from devastating flooding in Brazil
continues to rise, a single picture drives home the sense of loss.

Leao, a medium-sized brown mutt,
lies next to the grave of her owner, Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, who died in
the catastrophic landslides caused by heavy rain. This AFP/Getty picture was
taken on Saturday, the second consecutive day that the dog refused to leave the
woman's grave at the cemetery in Teresopolis, near Rio de Janiero.

Brazilians are bracing for more rain, fearing
more landslides after waves of muddy water swallowed towns in the country's
worst flood disaster on record.

At least 655 deaths were reported in a mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro
state, northeast of the city of Rio.

If anyone has NetFlix streaming, I urge you to watch Dogs Decoded: Nova. It's an amazing look at the relationship between dogs and humans and how dogs are significantly more intelligent than they were initially given credit for. Dogs are the only other animal that can look at a human and read their emotions, which chimps and apes cannot do. One researcher said that had humans not domesticated dogs that modern civilization would not have been possible due to how critical herding dogs were as early humans transitioned from a hunter/gatherer society to an agricultural one. Absolutely amazing stuff.

I saw the Science of Dogs by National Geographic. It basically says we wouldn't have the internets if it weren't for Golden Retrievers.

Just checked and it's available for streaming on NetFlix as well. I'm going to watch it right now.

It's good probably real similar to the one by Nova. Check out "Moment of Death" by Nat Geo. It's also on Netflix streaming.

just today i pulled into a convenience store where an old dog has been laying on bench for at least 10 years that i know of...well today he was not there and i did not think twice about it...after getting out of vehicle all the sudden this dog comes out of no where and scared the crap out of me...some old man in a red pickup truck had pulled up to store from the opposite direction the dog came from and the dog ran to the truck running and jumping like it was a year old puppy and i said to myself..."self? how did that dog know the old man was coming"? simply remarkable.... wished i could bring myself to get another dog,but after my dog had to be put to sleep after 18 years it has been hard...but on the bright side if history is any indication if i do get another one it would probably out live me...first dog lived to 19 and second one 18....

I was thumbing through the documentaries and I saw that one. I'll go back and add it. Looks like it'll be a documentary marathon tonight. Watching The Science of Dogs, Moment of Death, A State of Mind, Crossing the Line and Waiting for Armageddon.

Check out Restrepo.

I lost my little guy when my ex and I split up. I just recently submitted an application to volunteer at the local Humane Society so I can be around dogs all the time without actually having to get one.
