Anyone else watching this show? It shows things I've never heard of before.

They are talking about why Romans conquered so many lands. It was to gain riches, not necessarily to own people. The Romans brought back the spoils of war.

In another episode it talks about the architecture of Rome. It says that Rome used more stone than any other society before it and after it until the 19th century.

When you walk into the Pantheon you think there is no way this was constructed almost 2000 years ago. It seems impossible.

The slavery is quite apparent in the series Spartacus, and the desire for spoils
is also mentioned. If you enjoyed Gladiator this show is quite similar.

The show mentioned that Rome kept slaves as a matter of economics. This also contributed to the conquering of foreign lands. The people were brought back as slaves and Rome prospered.

You'll notice that Britain is only half conquered. We had a discussion about Hadrian's wall at work one time so I looked it up. I originally thought it was built by the Scots to keep the Romans out. It turns out it was built to keep out the "lawless Scots".

From Wikipedia:

"During Roman Times, the area was the northern border of the Roman Empire. The Romans built Hadrian's Wall to protect the empire from the more lawless Scottish tribes."

Anyone see the previews of "The Eagle"? It's a story about Roman soldiers who ventured into Caledonia (Scotland) and went missing on the other side of Hadrian's Wall.

Was there any mentioned of Boudicca, the celebrated Celtic queen, who gave the Romans a big scare after some astonishing victories?
