Lethal Weapon Remake Moving Forward at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. developing a Lethal Weapon remake with writer Will Beall
Warner Bros. is ramping up development on its remake slate with such titles as Lethal Weapon, The Wild Bunch, Westworld, The Dirty Dozen, Tarzan and Oh, God!.

The studio's new priority on remakes comes after the departure of Warner executive Jessica Goodman at the end of 2010. Warner Bros. is now reorganizing her portfolio of projects, which will be getting new leases on life.

The Lethal Weapon remake is the first project to move forward, with the studio hiring Will Beall to write the remake script. Beall is a former LAPD detective who garnered attention for his writing with the script Tales from the Gangster Squad. Beall's pitch maintained the buddy-cop theme with a hard-R edge that the studio was looking for.

The Dirty Dozen and Tarzan remakes have been in development for many years. We reported back in 2008 that Stephen Sommers was directing the Tarzan remake, although a deal was never made. In 2007, we reported that Zak Penn was writing the Tarzan remake, although it is unlikely he is still involved with the project.

As for The Wild Bunch, it is believed that Warner Bros. is enticed by the success of the True Grit, to make their own mark with a new Western remake. The Ethan Coen/Joel Coen remake has made over $129 million at the domestic box office since its December 22 release.

You can to read about a number of theoretical scenarios that could play out for these new projects.

Lethal Weapon was released January 1st, 1987 and stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Mitch Ryan, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love, Traci Wolfe, Jackie Swanson. The film is directed by Richard Donner.

The Dirty Dozen was released June 15th, 1967 and stars Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Richard Jaeckel, George Kennedy, Trini López. The film is directed by Robert Aldrich.

Tarzan comes to theaters in 2011.

Oh, God! was released October 7th, 1977 and stars John Denver, George Burns, Teri Garr, Donald Pleasence, Ralph Bellamy, William Daniels, Barnard Hughes, Paul Sorvino. The film is directed by Carl Reiner.

Certain movies I feel are classics and way too early to be re-touched.

MGM Moving Forward with Five Reboots and Remakes?
Source: Variety February 18, 2011

Variety is reporting that MGM is moving forward on five projects, including remakes of Mr. Mom and The Idolmaker, the reboots of RoboCop and Poltergeist, and a Hercules movie.

Darren Aronofsky was attached to direct RoboCop at one point. There's been three "RoboCop" movies, with the first two starring Peter Weller in the title role and the third starring Robert John Burke.

Michael Keaton starred in the 1983 original Mr. Mom, which was directed by Stan Dragoti and written by John Hughes.

The original The Idolmaker was directed by Taylor Hackford and starred Ray Sharkey.

Poltergeist was released in 1982 and was followed by sequels in 1986 and 1988.

The Hercules project has been in development at Spyglass with Peter Berg producing. According to the trade, the "story centers on the mythical figure, having turned his back on the gods, becoming a mercenary and training a ruthless army."

If audiences keep going they will keep making them. In the end it's the audience's fault. Hollywood only cares about quick money makers.

I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of Letha Weapons, although I think she's done several movies by now:

The Westworld remake has been in the planning stages for over ten years. I would love to see a new version of of that movie and Robocop, but Lethal Weapon, Oh God, and Mr. Mom? Really?

Warner Bros. Plans The Bodyguard Remake
Source: Deadline February 23, 2011

Warner Bros. is developing a remake of its 1992 film, The Bodyguard, Deadline reports.

Starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, the original film arrived from director Mick Jackson (who recently won an Emmy for directing the "Temple Grandin" television miniseries). Costner played a former Secret Service agent assigned to protect a famous musician (Houston) from a stalker. Over the course of the film, the two develop a romantic connection.

Famous for showcasing Houston's music (including the hit "I will Always Love You"), the aim for the new version is said to again cast a real-life singer in the role, though no official casting decisions have, as of yet, been announced.

Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer have been hired to adapt the screenplay. Their spec script, Family Getaway, was picked up by Warner Bros. last year after making the 2010 Black List.

Funny you should use that pic considering that a Three Stooges movie is currently in pre-production.

holly-wood is running out of ideas

But shame on them. They actually delegate these films to be blockbusters instead of taking a good script with a new idea and investing some money in it

David Slade to Reboot Daredevil
Source: 20th Century Fox March 15, 2011

20th Century Fox has targeted David Slade to helm the studio's reboot of the Marvel property Daredevil. ComingSoon.net has confirmed that, while no deal is in place, Slade is very likely the man for the job.

Though previously adapted by the studio in a 2003 version starring Ben Affleck in the lead, this version of Daredevil will reboot the franchise and will not be connected to the previous Mark Steven Johnson film (or the 2005 spinoff, Elektra).

As reported just over a year ago, Fox needs to have a Dardevil film in production in order to keep the rights from reverting to Marvel Studios (now owned by Walt Disney Pictures).

Slade, who made his feature debut with 2005's Hard Candy, previously tackled a comic book adaptation with 2007's 30 Days of Night. Since that film, he's been in Vampire-mode, turning in last year's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and was, last month connected to the "Dracula" tale, The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

The first time I read it, I thought it said David Spade... and was kind of scratching my head on the casting.

Daredevil was one of the dumber Marvel Heroes to begin with, and a terrible one to make a movie about.
