It only happens every few days. I'll turn on the computer and I can't open any applications. The hard drives sounds like it's working hard. I check the CPU usage and it's going from 2% to 50%. It'll drop then spike again, over and over and over.

I can't open Windows Media player. I can't open the internet. I can't do shit.

I've checked for viruses before and nothing. I even did a system reformat thinking that maybe it's some kind of virus that's hard to get. I still have the same fucking problem.

I have Windows Vista. This is just too frustrating. I feel like getting the computer and smashing it with a hammer.

Sure as hell sounds like a virus. Either that or maybe you have some anti virus program on your computer that automatically scans in the background at certain times. I've seen those really bog down a computer when they turn on.

It can't be a virus because like I said I reformatted it and I remember the computer doing this when it was brand new. I just don't understand. It'll usually take an hour to do whatever it's doing and then go back to normal. It pisses me off.

Sounds like a scan running in the background. Get into your task manager and let me know what processes are currently running.
