Been thinking about getting one. Have a few questions and concerns.

How is reading outside? Is it easy to see in the sun?

How much does it cost to download the books. Is it the same price per download or is it priced like a book?

And yes I do read books so spare me the jokes

I've had one for 3 months and love it. Reading outside is easy and fine. The kindle screen isn't backlit so the brighter your surroundings the better. Normally the price to download books is cheaper, sometimes about the same, but very rarely more than buying physical. Your best bet is to go to Amazon and type in the books you are interested in and they have a box that shows the price for the kindle edition, hardcover, and paperback. The last 4 books I downloaded cost 15, 10, 5, and 3 to download. It also give a sweet feature of letting you sample most books for free which pretty much means they give you the first couple of chapters with no obligation to buy.

It took me about 2 hours of tinkering around with my kindle before I felt like I had the hang of it so it's very easy and intuitive. I don't have a strong vocabulary so I'm always using the function of moving the cursor over a word I don't know, and it brings up an instant definition without having to leave the page. The device itself is very light and not uncomfortable at all to hold.

I highly recommend

these r stunning.. a must have...reading in the sun is just like paper..its special technology that uses almost no power..the pigments literally move super quickly to the position that is the letters..like ink on paper...then no power to keep them there so the batteries can last three weeks! there is no backlit display that kills batteries like on I phones, I pads and I touches that are done in 3-5 hours...these E READERs (nook also a great one as is the sony reader, same technology) bring the "book" feeling that authors want to give as in a book..books are 30 cents on the dollar compared to an actual book and many thousands free (past copy-rite dates)

Not sure how much money you are looking to spend, but you might as well get an iPad, or an android tablet. My iPad battery lasts a very long time. I only charge it every few days with moderate use. I would have to say that the Android OS is not nearly as battery friendly, but you can get a decent android tablet for around $200-$300. Actually, one of my co-workers brought in a NOOK color the other day from Barnes and Noble, and it looked pretty darn good. Can run android 2.2 as well I believe.
