If you’re lucky enough to be heading to the 2011 Super Bowl to see the Steelers and Packers at Cowboys Stadium at 6:00 PM February 6, well … hopefully you’ve already done your planning. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram points out that parking lots near the stadium are currently selling spots at a remarkable $990 each. And that’s not all you’ll overpay for: hotel rooms in the area are going for three to five times their normal rate. And then there’s the tickets themselves: StubHub has them going for about $3000 for nosebleed seats, and $10,000-$15,000 for really premium ones.

I’ll just be watching the game at home (it’s on FOX), and I’ve never seen a Super Bowl in person. But the hugeness of it has always startled me a little – I like sports mostly as relatively uncomplicated athletic competitions, and the money that swirls around the Super Bowl (both the actual money it costs to go, and the money being flaunted through huge, non-football-related halftime shows and expensive commericals) is distracting. There will be almost 700 limousines on hand for this year’s Super Bowl, for example. If you’re going, enjoy the little bits of football you’ll see through the clouds of money forming everywhere. Not that watching it on TV is necessarily much better.

Motel 8 in area of game avereging over $400 a night SB Weekend.

View attachment 11808

Hi folks. We were trolling on some travel websites recently and found some pretty steep prices on hotel rooms in Arlington near Cowboys Stadium -- at least the ones that were left. Some establishments are charging hundreds of dollars more than normal for rooms on Super Bowl weekend. One Super 8 Hotel in Arlington is asking $700 on the night of the game. The hotel normally charges about $50 a night, according to web searches.

Last week, I discussed the phenomenon with Tara Green, vice president and chief operating officer of the Super Bowl XLV host committee. In particular, I told her about the skyrocketing prices of some hotels. Here is what she said:

"Expectations are all over the map. Some people think the Super Bowl will cure the recession. It won't. ... A lot of what we are doing as a host committee is managing those expectations. A hotel next to the stadium will have a different impact than a hotel that's 45 miles away.

But hotels can easily price themselves out of the equation. If that [high priced] motel expects to be full at the Super Bowl, it is sorely mistaken. Fans will have spent their budget to get here. The Super Bowl is not recession proof. People will not have a blank check mentality."

I couldn't fathom spending $10K to go to one game, and then spending $1K on parking. $11K for about 3-4 hours of entertainment? Not to mention $7-8 per beer. I'd rather sit in front of my 50" HDTV and get blitzed on a $20 case of beer.

Dallas Hotels Almost Packed to the Hilt

Die-hard fans would either settle for watching the Super Bowl on TV or pay thousands of dollars a night just to see their favorite team play.

Sorry folks, you’ll just have to settle for watching the Super Bowl on TV. If you’re looking to book a hotel room at Dallas for a reasonable price to watch the games live, you’re just a bit too late.
Local news networks report a full-house at every hotel in the city and even its surrounding areas as corporate sponsors, NFL staff, and media people have already picked up the phones to make reservations even before the remaining seconds at the AFC championships expired. Most local hotels report that they had to double their reservations staff because the phones wouldn’t stop ringing until the wee hours of the morning.
This comes in spite of the double to triple peak season rates. Rooms don’t come lower than $300 a night during this season.
But as of today there might still be a few places that offer lodging, but don’t expect them to come cheap. And the closer they are to the stadium, the higher the price they command. A major hotel located a few miles from the dome is offering $699 on game night, but was significantly lower on other dates.
“The hotels are doing what they have to do, which is make hay while the sun shines,” said Dave Litman, owner of getaroom.com.
But die-hard fans don’t mind. Some even profess to be willing to pay up to a thousand dollars a night to see their favorite team play in the Super Bowl.

The Comfort Inn in Decatur Texas an hour away has rates for $75.00 a night. If I was going to the game, I would do that.

I was lucky enough to be picked in the Packer season-ticket lottery. Will get two tickets for $800 face value each on Thursday. Selling them to a buddy who has $$$ for $2,000 each. Can't really afford airfare and hotel expenses. Will use part of the money to go to Arizona for a week of spring training in March. Wouldn't mind seeing the Packers in the Super Bowl but will watch it at a bar with friends.
