Man SS - I've seen you ask some strange questions, but this ???? I'm sure it can be done, but is this really something you want to do???? I would think flying from SAN or to CUN or LAX to CUN would be the way to go.

I mapped from San Diego to Cancun - showing 2,761.1 miles - about 530 in the US an the rest in Mexico - showing 48 hours and 33 minutes travel time.

With air travel I'd pass on this one.

I drove from The Mexico-Belize border to Brownsville. I think its safer if you get to Texas, cross the border, then head west to San Diego and south. I had no problems. had to give a couple of cops a $10 or so, but no issues.

I guess the same applies to getting to Cancun. I would head from SD to Brownsville, cross over at border, and head straight south. The problem with crossing at TJ is, you still will be in the vicinity of the other Border towns when you head east. You have to avoid Juarez at all costs. TJ is no picnic these days either. Its a nice drive. If you do this, i will recommend a place to stay half way from the border to Cancun.

I know of Brownsville very well unfortunately. Spent 38 days at Cameron County jail, freaking nightmare ! Customs nabbed me for some BS.

What a strange question.

At this moment, Mexico is the most dangerous place in the world...even more dangerous than Iraq and Afghanistan. Why would you want to drive in Mexico?

Is this possible?

Anyone done it?

Only two kinds of people would make this drive. First, a complete moron. Second, a very experienced member of some sort of criminal or military enterprise, heavily armed, and backed up by comrades who are also experienced and heavily armed, with the ability to call in air support and/or reinforcements. The vehicles would be armor plated, the group would be extremely heavily armed, and they would have made pre-arrangements to have fuel air lifted in at specific points.

Have you done it ? If you haven't done it your not qualified to make that call ! Sitting in your rocking chair and reading the newspaper are not what I would qualify as a expert opinion There are dangerous spots in Mexico, especially the borders, but you could say the same thing about some of the US inner cities too. Detroit comes to mind. Fact is anything south of Mexico City, is about as safe as I have ever seen. Most Highways are heavily traveled, just like here. How are they suppose to single your car out with thousands like yourself traveling the same route. So just make sure your not out driving at night or not keeping up with the other cars. Follow buses is a smart thing to do. Like I said in earlier post, don't go West to East within earshot of border towns. Not hard to do, since you can make the same route US bound and head farther south into Texas before crossing over. Awsome drive on gulf side !

I tried to drive from Nogales to Santiago Chile in 1991 and next to takeing the Rams HUGE in the Super Bowl against the Patriots was probably the dumbest thing I ever did
or tired to do
I made it to Mexico City and threw in the towel and that was before the narco traficante took over
It can be done but you will need the following
1)You MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH AT THE SPEED IN WHICH THEY SPEAK-For example North Philadelphia Puerto Rican spanglish or East La Latin English Spoken in the kitchens of Chili's is not going to cut it
2)You need a vehicle large enough to hold the following
a)4 new tires on rims
b)All the various tools to work on the car-EVERY TOOL YOU CAN THINK OF
c)2 to 4 gas cans with gas in them
d)BOTH FRONT AND REAR-LEFT AND RIGHT CV JOINTS
3)55 gallon drum of imodium
4)CASH- in the local form especially once your 50 miles from US border-it maybe be different now but 20 years ago they didn't want to see any form of plastic/credit card
5)a case of unopened bibles-so you can play the god/missionary card
6) a screw lose-again Rams -17 looked good so did this ride
