If yes, what do you do?

I'm looking to spend less time sports gambling/watching sports.

I sent in an application last week to volunteer with the Tulsa Humane Society. Haven't heard back yet, but I'm looking forward to helping if they have any openings.

My mom has ran a non-profit animal rescue since the day I was born. I figure I got my volunteering out of the way early by having to work before I got dinner.

I don't watch sports. The only sports I like are girl's amateur beach volleyball and topless soccer (I saw this on Italian TV a few times).

I wrote computer programs to do my capping, takes about 30 minutes a day.

I volunteer working with children. Teaching them to read and write. Being a part time "dad" or "big brother" for the orphans. Once I took a van load of 5 year olds and a van load of puppies to an old folks home. It was great.

I spend a lot of time with the animals around my place, feeding them, taking care of them. I put out lots of bird food, I guess I have about 300 birds that live right around my house, when I first moved here there were maybe a dozen. When I come outside you can hear a change in their sing-songing.

I currently volunteer at the library about 10 hours a week. When I was younger, some of the best times I had was doing volunteer work. One summer I was on this volunteer exchange program between the UK and the US. I ended up helping run a camp in the East End of London. One of the best times I ever had - went to the pub and played darts every night. Met some very nice young ladies who were very interested in getting to know young americans.

Isn't there an organization where, if you volunteer, you get free room and board on vacation. Anybody ever done that.

Hope you are able to work with them. I started volunteering with a local rescue just over a year ago and am really enjoying it.

Currently no, unfortunately being in college consumes most of my time. When I was younger I made Eagle Scout in boyscouts, we used to do volunteer work almost every week. The satisfaction that comes from helping others is priceless.

I volunteered for years at rescue missions and animal shelters in both operational and administrative capacities. During this time, I was a wholesaler in the finance industry, but never could stand the corporate world. While racing from dull meeting to dull meeting, I always looked forward to my volunteer hours. Eventually, I was able to leverage my experience into a new career with an NPO.

I now work in fundraising for an organization that rescues dogs (no breeding) and trains them to be service dogs for people with disabilities. We have an emphasis on returning military, and also have programs that assist at-risk youth through the human-animal connection.

As a small NPO (less than 1MM budget) we rely heavily on volunteers. Our base is 200+ and includes everything from a volunteer IT guy to foster homes to grooming dogs. If I were you I would find a cause you feel close to, meet with someone from the organization and talk about how you can help. Smaller NPOs have very limited resources, so specialized skills you can bring to the organization are extremely valuable.

Have fun!

Yep. The local ASPCA (animal shelter) with my kids. An athletic booster for their high school. And help out from time to time at our church

As far as the ASPCA we started it mostly because my girls need to build their resume for college. However after a few visits we've found it to be very rewarding. (Although I've never mentioned to them that I'm still a Michael Vick fan, lol)

Yeah, volunteering would suck if you had to do it. Have you thought about doing some other more rewarding volunteering? If you wanted to do it I'm guessing it would mean more to you.

Sounds like volunteering to help animals is a good therapy for a lot of you. I think that is something I would enjoy doing since I like animals of all types.

I like kids too but I'm so scared of some of the brats accusing people of doing things that I could never volunteer to be a Big Brother or something like that. I wouldn't mind volunteering to help kids in a situation where there were a lot of adults around too.

Thanks for all the input guys. The key here is that not only are you helping others, but you are helping yourself.

I volunteer at a cancer hospice where I did a clinical for nursing school. You wouldn't expect it, but it's probably the most optimistic, happiest place I know. I go in a couple of Saturday mornings a month, make breakfast, chat or maybe go for a walk with the patients. It's very rewarding.

That's awesome! My dog is a St John's Ambulance Therapy Dog, and I take him with me to the hospice when I go. Animals are amazing therapy!

Thank you for the work that you do! :)
