A salesman at a Chevy Dealership in suburban Chicago was fired Monday for refusing to take off his Green Bay Packers tie, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

John Stone wore the tie to work at Webb Chevrolet in Oak Lawn, Ill., to celebrate the Packers’ NFC Championship Game win over the Bears.

General Manager Jerry Roberts asked Stone to remove the tie five times, saying it might aggravate Bears fans and make it more difficult to sell cars. When Stone refused, he was fired.

“He said, ‘You have two options,’” a furious Stone said later Monday to the Chicago Sun-Times. “Remove the tie, or you’re fired.”

“When I didn’t, he said, ‘You can leave, you’re fired.’ Does that sound fair to you?”

Stone, a 34-year-old father of two who had worked at the dealership for a month and a half, said he has been a Packer fan for about a decade.

“I was just showing my love for my team and it was a nice, smart tie that matched my clothes — none of the customers minded: they had a sense of humor about it,” Stone told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Roberts defended the firing by saying that the Packers tie would have "salted the wounds" of Bears fans.

Roberts said the dealership spends $20,000 a month in radio advertising with the Bears, including a "Most Valuable Bear” award handed out after each game.

“If he loves the tie more than his job, he’s welcome to keep wearing it — elsewhere,” Roberts said.

People need to use more common sense. Unless of course he gets some kind of money from this. Maybe the Packers will hire him to be in a commercial or something.

he will sue and he will win, and he should win.....i am a bears fan, but i am not a sore loser....i also am in sales and the tie would be a great attention getter. and from the interview he gave it was working. he said that the cust he had dealt with while wearing it, which was also in memory of his recently deceased grandma. the dealership will find out the hard way that being a poor sport will cost them in the long run.....it's just a tie.....

He was on Dan Patrick and stated that it was in memory for his grandmother who was buried Friday.

He also said he was offered a job from another Chevy dealer in town.

screw this guy. wearing the tie shows bad judgement to begin with, and if your boss asks you to do something numerous times, just do it.

Why does it show bad judgement? If you are from Wisconsin but live in Illinois it's not ok to support your team? It's not that serious to fire someone over right?

The amount of money the dealership spends on advertising pales in comparison to how much all the salesman lost taking bears and the points

the place is a sponsor of the bears. and what good is wearing the tie going to do anyways. i dont think its the end of the world, but if your employer asks you to remove it repeatedly, just f'n do it.
