Any of the 29 other clubs hoping to capitalize on a nearing deadline for the Cardinals and Albert Pujols to work out a contract extension will be disappointed.

Even if the talks were to fall apart, the three-time National League Most Valuable Player would not be traded, ESPN reported on Saturday. Pujols can veto any trade because he's spent 10 years in the same league and five with the same club, and he reportedly won't waive that right for anyone. Neither the Cardinals nor Pujols' camp have commented on the report.

Other clubs have inquired about Pujols in the past, but the Cardinals never pursued those talks, according to the report. It's unclear if they would do so now if Pujols was open to playing elsewhere.

Pujols and his agent, Dan Lozano, have set Feb. 19, the day the first baseman reports to Spring Training, as the deadline to work out a deal. Beyond that, Pujols has said he wants no distractions during the season.

According to ESPN, a 10-year, $275 million deal similar to Alex Rodriguez's most recent contract with the Yankees could be what Pujols seeks.
Pujols' numbers are truly staggering: 42 home runs, 118 RBIs, a .414 on-base percentage and .312 average in 159 games last season, combined with the consistency of at least 32 home runs in each of his 10 big league seasons. The slugger turned 31 earlier in January.

PS. What kind of numbers would AP show the baseball world if he played 81 games a year at Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park???

how is he only going to play in STL if they cant afford to pay him?

stl should sign him for $1 more than arod makes....you cant pay the undisputed best player in baseball less (unless he goes before the mic and says i dont care about the money) so you offer $1 more on principal and go about your ways...love the fact he wants to stay but can they pay him that kind of $$$$

In St. Louis you might be surprises by the reaction. Many including myself are most concerned about the amount of years he is receiving. The concern is Pujols gets a contract so big it hampers the rest of the team in the future as Dewitt is not exactly known for opening his wallet. Most want him to stay with a five or six year contract but if he wants ten years let him walk.

this is all the cardinals' fault...

They could have extended pujols when howard got his new deal..

rsox are tied up w/gonzo, the yanks w/big tex, and the phils w/howard. where else could he go? has gonzo ever signed a contract w/the red sox? if not, make a trade, gonzo for pujols. the sox will pay him for 10 yrs. 10 yrs seems kinda long.

the Cubs only gave pena a 1 year deal for a reason...

This is sitting on hendry's radar & you can bet he hopes that pujols reports to jupiter w/out a new deal...

cubs are going to be offering up big money in 2012...Pujols would be their 1st choice...& fielder 2nd

albert to the cubs. that would be seismic. cubs are friggin jinxed, though. even if they should ever get him, you know something would go wrong. even fielder to the cubs, same division, and him right up the road. pena got 10M from the cubs; don't know if he over .200 last yr. i would never trust hendry to negotiate a contract w/albert pujols.

if pujols hits the open market...

I think the new cub owner ricketts would handle the negotiations w/pujols..& have hendry get the coffee...

you know the cubs have always wanted to get revenge on the lou brock trade...

Possible opportunity to do so next year

He won't accept a trade is what he said. He will go on the free market if he doesn't get a deal.
