Former Florida coach Urban Meyer is joining ESPN as a college football analyst.

Meyer
Meyer, who won two BCS national championships at Florida, will make his debut Wednesday during ESPNU's coverage of national signing day. He will work weekly regular-season games during the season, as well as providing studio analysis on ESPN's "College Football Live" and "College GameDay. "

"Football has played an extremely important role in my life for the past 25 years and ESPN has given me an incredible opportunity to join its world-class team and share my passion, knowledge, and enthusiasm for the game with fans across the country," Meyer said in a prepared statement.

Meyer resigned from Florida after the 2010 season. He served as a guest analyst for ESPN's coverage of the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game.

"Coach Meyer brings a fresh voice and a contemporary knowledge of the game," said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president for production. "As he showed during BCS coverage, his ability to communicate the strategic aspects of the game and his incredible track record for success will serve college football fans everywhere."

wonder how much some of these guys get paid to do this....i mean, its not like ESPN "needs" them, and they don't have that many options....can't believe it's huge bucks, since it's not like they can just say i'll go elsewhere...u got the 3 networks and ESPN, and thats it really for major markets......

I played for Meyer back during his first job as a head coach. I think he'll be back coaching within 3 years. Some of the stories I could tell...lol. Intense guy. Actually, my college roommate who played on the same team when Meyer was coaching at my college will be kicking for the Steelers this weekend.

So, tell us a story about him.

First week or so he starts as head coach, he calls a team meeting in our film rooms at about 3 PM. He tells everyone to show up to the field house tomorrow morning at 5 AM with workout clothes and just walks out. No one has any clue what's going on since winter conditioning is not set to start yet. I walk into the field house at around 4:45 and see garbage cans set up every 10 yards on the sideline with the lids off. I just start thinking...this can't be good. He blows through the doors and starts going off about some e-mails he got from instructors about guys screwing off in class, or not going to class altogether. Everybody on the line he says...We ended up doing 300 yard shuttles over and over for 3 hours with pushups and crunches in between. At one point, I saw our long snapper finish one of his shuttles, run through the line straight to the wall where his keys were sitting, and just take off. Never heard from him again. Guys were puking all over the place on the sideline. We referred to it from that point on as "black Wednesday". I didn't hear it, but it was reported that someone on the team just stopped running and was standing there with a blank stare on his face. He asked him what the hell he was doing. He said, "Sir, I just saw Jesus Christ, and he told me to stop running." I guess that's when he blew the whistle and ended the session.

Needles to say we had the biggest turnaround in D-I that year, went from 2-9 to 8-3.

Frankie, nice story. As a Florida fan, I've followed his career well. That BGSU team had somewhere around 20 players leave or quit in the first season. Utah had a similar exodus.

I don't think he'll coach again....and if so, it won't be in 3 years. At a minimum, he'd wait until his youngest (son) is out of the house...or finished in college.

Taking the job w/ ESPN will keep him busy, but nothing like coaching/recruiting, which is a year round job. He'll have plenty of time to spend w/ his family. He's keeping an office at UF.

I don't understand the hate for this guy (from Rival fans). He wasn't a Steve Spurrier, where he needled his rivals at every given chance. The guy is a winner...and has 2 NC's to hang his hat on. So, for those who are hating on him: Go fuck yourself!!

I'll have to think of some more specific stories. Film sessions after game day or a big scrimmage were always fun. I remember he had to explain to us once that when he was critiquing our play on the field, he was not commenting on our character or what he thought of us as a person. I think that was after he told our kicker he had no balls and was a pussy after missing a few field goals in a game.

I hated losing any games because instead of our monday team dinner being a steak buffet, we got hot dogs and beans instead at the request of Coach Meyer.

Man, I'm not even sure. I don't think it was as high as 20. I know he did pull two scholarships because he thought the guys had no business being D-I athletes. He is a good coach, can't argue with his results. I'm not sure he's a guy you love to play for though...it's all business. Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing type of mentality. I was never sure if I could ever really joke around with the guy because he was so serious about football. I actually first met him in high school when I went on a visit to Notre Dame. He was the wide receiver coach there at the time and took me and my dad around the campus and to watch ND Play LSU that year. A guy at the hospital I work at played for Meyer at Utah, and he told me he felt pretty much the same way about him.

One thing I noticed is that he kept his whole offensive coaching staff together from Day 1 all the way to Florida, but many of them departed from there after a few seasons at FLA. I definitely could see him coming back to the Big Ten down the road. He's originally from Ohio, and a midwest guy. Coached at Ohio State under Earl Bruce back in the day.

Frankie,

Great stories.

I have a feeling in 2 or 3 years when JT retires, he may wind up in Columbus.
