LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Arkansas National Guard officials said 30 percent of state high school graduates who took the entrance exam for the Guard during the past three months failed because of poor reading, writing and math skills.

Lt. Col. Greg Pelts, the Guard's commander for recruiting and retention, said the recent failure rate on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, is consistent with the rate in 2010.

The ASVAB test is used by all military branches to determine if applicants have basic skills to qualify for enlistment. It's also used to help applicants find a military specialty.Nationally, about 22.6 of applicants fail the test. In Arkansas, the failure rate is 27.7 percent. Arkansas has the nation's eighth-worst ASVAB scores.

The saying in the Ark school system used to be "thank God for Mississippi or we would be last"

Only 22 percent that actually take the test. I wonder if that's a fair representation of America as a whole.

I'd like to compare it to the USPS test, love to do that ! I passed that one and got hired, think that has to be harder ? I'd really love to see the questions on a written cop test !.....just don't get them all right, I guess ?

USPS test is at least graded fairly ( ?), then x-tra points for veterans.
